hi , bought a better cooling head because it seems its always running hot.
I just recieved it and there is no copper washer for the bottom
where it meets the block.
What I am wandering is do I need one or does this head seal just fine to the cylinder sleeve?

Use one of the shims from your existing head.

Try to keep the orientation the same as it is now. Just dont flip it is what I mean.

Keep in mind, while better cooling heads can in fact lower your run temps, you still do not want to run overly lean (even if the temps seem OK). You can still damage your piston and sleeve.

What were your temps before you bought the head?

I dont have a gauge but it would stall, and steam.
I always have a blue stream of smoke when accellerating

Stalling and steaming is NOT good. Possible air leak.

I would strongly suggest picking up a temp gauge. You may be running the risk of a blown engine if you are not checking temps. Regardless of the head.

The water test at bare minimum.

Hey Chris -My maxx steams out the gas tank after running awhile. Is that normal?

Sup bro, to answer your question.....is it normal from what I've seen?...yes lol.......is it desierable or ok?..hell no. I've got my T-maxx tuned perfect now and I still have to richen it a 1/16th to a 1/8th of a turn to keep it from steaming and stalling after one tank (this is in relatively cool weather too....I don't run my Maxx in the dead heat of the day). The TRX 2.5 is a powerful motor for a .15 but it's the biggest tunning nightmare and biggest overheating POS motor that I've ever owned (when this motor is done I'm getting the Sirio .18). You need to get a cheap temp gun bro so you can check temps and richen up accordingly to keep your motor from steaming off. I like to keep mine between 240-270 but it usually hits 300+ after a full tank run!

Mrjackass - SUp dude......I ordered the Nova head too (it should be a kick ass head). If you could get that motor to run a 270 (or less) with the Nova head you should be running pretty lean but still not burning up the motor! I'll update everyone on performance when I get the NOva head installed.....it sure it pertty!

Peace

A little residual steaming effect at the end of a run is one thing, however, if its steaming away then you certainly have a problem. If you cut off the engine when you see it steaming, you will more than likely hear the fuel boiling, popping, sizzling etc.. Nope, not good when that happens.

Trust me when I tell you a good temp gauge is VERY valuable in the long run. Yes, you can use water to test, I just prefer a visual temp reading on the gauge.

Hell, after long enough, and calissed fingers, you can actually get used to the touch. My buddy Jay is so good at it that he is within about 15 degrees by touching it. DISCLAIMER! If you burn yourself its not my fault. Mills can run in excess of 400 degrees and will certainly leave a mark and take some skin with it!!!! And no, my buddy Jay doesn't touch the heads when they are that hot. You only have to get close to be able to tell when it runs that hot.

Like I said, a temp gauge is just irreplaceable in my opinion.

It usuallly steams a little after it stalls...it's just running to hot...I don't have any air leaks and I have to run it allot richer then I'd like ....I just need to install my Nova cooling head, it doesn't take a rocket scientist to realize that the stock Traxxas head sucks....I can't wait to replace the 2.5 motor when it's time

I couldn't agree more.....Duratrax makes a good little guage now that my hobby shop sells for $24.00......a temp gun is an invaluable tool that's more important then any hop up part you might wanna get first!
