RC Driving Style
I havent had anyproblems with my savage, but now i can't get it to start. i ran it last night, all was fine no problems. then thismorning I could start it, but would have to idle it high to keep it going, and if i dropped the idle down, it would die. wasn't able to drive it because it wouldnt start. my glow plug is good, fuel is brand new, no pinches in the line. now i can't even get it to start. or even sound like it wants to. any ideas? thanks for anyhelpyou can offer
 
Is fuel staying in the line???? If you have to turn up the idle that high that is an indication of a lean condition one way or another. Either from a fuel line leak, carb leak, backplate leak or fuel tank leak. Have you messed with tuning at all prior t oit not running well?? If so that might just be the problem.
 
Which engine are you running?
Are you using a pull start or roto?
How is your one way bearing?
If the one way isn't functioning, no amount of starting will get it going!
 
savage 25 stock motor, rotostart. one way is fine, the motor is getting compression, i can see the fuel in the line moving. I didnt mess with any needles from one run to the other. and it worked fine the night before.

my dad , who will never drive it again drove it though some sludge. and got it everywhere, lucky for me, and him... nothign was damaged. i took off the skids last night and cleaned them up, thats about the only thing thats been messed with.

wheres this backplate located? i will check the manual too.

if its running to lean, which needle do i adjust hsn or lsn? ( I'm on breakin seettings)
 
It should hardly be running lean on break in settings. Chances are if you happened to buy a savage that had been sitting around for a while the screws in the back plate came loose. The screws used to work their way loose. It is depicted here in this link in the second picture on the right with the whole one way bearing assembly.

PS you might try richening up the low speed needle a little bit and see if that does the trick.
 
tried that, nothing seemed to do the trick. it sounds like its going to start for the 1st 2 seconds, but thats about it. i think its flooding out, because when i take my airflilter off afterwards, it feels wet from the fuel. any other thoughts?
 
ok.. i got it running. but when i hit the gas, it stays on the gas for a few seconds and i have to hit the brakes. it seems to be running kinda hot. guess i will search for a threaad on how to set the needles. is it normal for them to be really hard to turn?
 
Hmmm first of all you should consult your HPI manual or go to www.hpiracing.com and search under the savage page than click on manual and than the Nitrostar S25 manual and there will be a link from there telling you what page the needle settings are on. Really dude you should invest in a temperature gun. One of the best things I ever bought. Later

lol i like how the last one is a glue gun! i'll that that one... i set the needles to factory and it was running great for about 10 minute, then when i let off the gas, it doesn't go down to idle, it stays hung open, just a little and i can't seem to make it stop.. what causes this? the longer it runs, the higher the idle gets. could my batteries just be getting low?
 
the hotter the engine the more expansion in the chamber, meaning lower compression and a leaner burn. The hotter the engine gets the leaner it will become so the engine revs will increase a little. Check the idle screw with the air filter off then replace it and start up the beast, then run for a while until the engine starts to idle higher than usual and turn the low speed needle anti clockwise an 8th of a turn at a time until it lowers the engine revs enough. Same thing happened with mine from new, set everything to factory settings hsn to 3 1/2 turns and lsn to 3 1/4 turns but i found out that my best lsn setting is around 7 1/4 turns (nearly all the way out) which is unusual, must be a slightly faulty mill carb but the glow plugs are never black or white so mixtures must be right. Simple rule : If your truck sets off like a bat out of hell then the LSN is good enough. If you can reach full speed in about 5 seconds then the HSN is good enough. Make sure you have smoke coming from the exaust, but not too much. Sorry for long reply
 
i will try that when i get off work tomarro, thanks. but the newer savages like mine dont have an idle skew, just a knob on the controller. which i have backed up all the way. thanks again
 
LOL Gibson yes they do have an idle screw homie. There should be two visible needles on the carb and where the carb faces the cooling head probably over by where the fuel line comes in you have the idle screw. It might even be inset a little I know mine does not stick out on my hyper 8 port.
 
wow, man is that thing hidden in there! i bought a temp gun today finally found one. wish me luck

temperature of 250 after a 25 minute cruise. crisp starts, good smoke on wot. but when i let off the gas its still giveing alittle gas. not going to idle unless i hold the break down for a few seconds. my guess is the mechanics of the carb are a little dirty and somthings slowing the action down. so I'm gonna tear it down and clean it up and i'll post the results.
 
Have a look at the bits of fuel tube on the throttle linkage. If they're OK then look at the throttle whilst adjusting your trim settings. Sometimes the trim settings can leave the truck with a little gas when your finger's off the trigger on the other hand adjusting the trim can leave the break on if you're not careful.
I find it a fine line between getting my truck to coast freely with no throttle and having it stop too quickly when I just want to slow down gently. After all, if you slow down too quickly, the dog might actually catch it!
