OK, i'm looking at a new mill for one of my rigs and i was wondering what the difference is between the Nitro Star K5.9 and the Picco.

Obviously there is a difference in displacement, but which would give the best performance over the longer period ??

Yes i am aware most do not like these kind of questions, but I am asking as I am looking for the best "bang for my buck" as it were.

I'm keeping the rig it's going into quiet, to avoid many of the usual "it will do this or do that to this part of that rig" kind of replies. I am looking for straight, honest advice about the above 2 engines and which one i would be best with in the long term.

Well the 5.9 is a rtr mill. The red dot is a high end piece. Chances are the 5.9 has as much power and torque, but won't last as long. The red dot (from what I've read) will have a break-in of over 1 gallon, but IMO would be 200 bucks well spent. I've heard that the red-dot may have crank bearing issues from time to time, but that's common for new engines, as there is alot of stress on them during break-in. You'd be just as likely to have that problem on a 5.9.

Keep up with the bearings and the Picco will run 3x longer than a K5.9..
The 5.9 is a big dispacement turd. The bearings Axial uses are horrible quality in these engines.Tolerances are even worse.
Go with the Picco .28, not the Red dot. Buy the regular .28 and send it to Exetreme RC Mods.Change the bearings and conrod in the engine as needed and it will last a long time. Not to mention kill a 5.9 all day long, before it's Modded.
I have a Picco .21 that will outrun the 5.9 no doubt.
It's rated @ 42K peak RPM. It is violent on bottom end, and pulls harder and harder, no real dead spots in the powerband. It has over 7 gallons and I have replaced the bearings 3 times and the rod once. This is totally normal for a true high performance engine.

I have to back up Scrogg on this one....the 5.9 was a bit of a disappointment. My dad put one in his Jammin CRT and my LRP .28 spanks it's ass every time in torque and top end. The Picco p3 .28 has even a bit more power. I would have to just say No to the 5.9 if it was a choice. Picco or LRP all the way. My first LRP has 5 gallons on it and is STILL an engine to be reckoned with.

Having just a Picco .26 Maxx in my Revo, I'd have to say that Picco was the way to go. Tons of power and it doesn't gulp fuel.

I can't wait to get past the 2 tanks I've got on my 21.

2 tanks, you got a long way to go! It will start to make good compression during the next few tanks. Expect it to actually get more difficult to turn over when it starts to wear the piston to the sleeve.

hpi built up the hype on the 5.9 but i have to say it fell way short!! i wouldnt even bother with it to be honest and I'm a HPI junkie lol. the picco is a better motor hands down.....and a good 28 engine will give you more excitement then the bigger engines anyway...and if you have it modded by "robin" who is the owner of extreme rc mods you will have a engine that will idle all day long and will run smooth throughout the rpm's

That's good to know, I thought it was a bit light on pinch. I took the head off the other day and noticed that the pinch area in the sleeve is much wider that the 2 mm one on my 3.3's. That told me just how precise these piccos are. I'm sold on 'em.

Not only that the picco is an Italian motor, look what else comes from Italy. . .Ferrari, Lamborghini, Alfa-Romao, Bugatti. . .thats gotta say something

looks like i'm getting the picco then guys.

(why do i have a sudden sense of de ja vue ?)

I know about the TRX resonater, but what about pipes ? and can i use a 3.3 sprung header ?

If I were you I'd look at a THS pipe, it comes with a header and they rock. About 50-60 bucks american. They're all spring, I wouldn't have it any other way.

This here should do it. Just do your homework first.

Or.....

Ohhhhhh..................i know about the power band options on tuned exhausts, i just didn't know what the best pipe option would be.
