Ok so I bought 2 2nd hand cars the other day this and a kyosho race car. I went to the model shop near me and he said he fixed it because the spring on the big gear had collapsed but this hasn't sorted it, he also told me this truck is a traxxas rustler. The axle spins with the motor but the small gear doesn't which leads me to believe the gear doesn't fit on the axle? Please can someone have a look? Sorry bout my terminology I no nothing of cars lol and sorry of the picture quality.

BTW. The car has a .12 engine if that helps?

If I'm reading right, the axle you're referring to is the CRANKSHAFT of the engine and when you start it, the crankshaft is turning but the CLUTCHBELL with the small gear does not engage?
IF that is what you're saying, then you need to pull the engine and take the clutchbell off and inspect the clutch behind it. It may be time for new clutch shoes.

BTW,from what I can tell I believe what you have is a Nitro Sport, not a Rustler.

Yep thats exactly what i'm saying.. thanks for the help! Can i remove just the engine with minimal taking apart the rest of the car? Iv got myself a traxxas rustler manual and exploded views so i'm gonna have to have a go at this.. How will I tell if I need new clutch shoes?

Couple screws on the bottom and you should be able to pull the engine, you can tell if the shoes are busted or if its in real rough shape

Ok your the 2nd person thats said it's a sport and on the front bumper it says TRX so I think you may be right...

But good news!! I've got straight on with the project and dismantled the car it only took like a hour! :D

So I've got these pics and what I think what may be the clutch thing you guys are on about? I don't know i'll leave it to you experts :P

There's not a huge difference between the Rustler/Sport but anyway, yeah you found the clutch. I can't tell much from your pics,if it's not gouged/broken,try to scuff it up some with some fine sandpaper and inside the clutch bell too. Or you could take it and compare to a new set at your lhs,if the diameter is worn too small is another concern.
