I have the oppurtunity to buy a tmaxx 3.3 for $160. It's definitely used, but I was wondering, what questions should I ask the seller before I just buy it from him? Yes, I am new to the hobby, but this is the truck I'd like to start off with. I'm just looking to mainly use it on my street and a park around the corner. Light water/mud. Is it good for that? Any other information you can tell me will be greatly appreciated...thanks!

Mike

If you can get him to run it for you, that would be a good start. Pick it up yourself and spin the wheels, listen to make sure that there isnt any grinding noises in the trans or diffs. Move the wheels up and down with your hands and look for any broken parts, ie. a arms, driveshafts etc. For $160, you can't expect much though. As long as it runs and there are no broken parts on it, thats all I would look for. The Tmaxx is not water proof, but you can upgrade to the Traxxas 2075 waterproof servos and a waterproof receiver box and that would make it alot better suited for wet conditions.

how much would the upgrade cost? I know I want a nitro truck that i can play with in the street with my nephew but also do some light bashing with it. I'm not really looking to drop more than $300. Is there anything else you'd recommend?

Not sure about your area but here you can a new t maxx for around 400. Maybe a bit more so I would say look at new and compare the two first. At 160 your half way to a new one if you need to replace any parts high away now its not worth it. IMO

You could pick up a couple of the 2075 servos for $60ish off of Ebay and the waterproof rx box would probably be around $10. And yeah, it would depend on what needed ot be replaced right away for sure.

damn, that's a good point. i really wanted one today that's why i was looking for a used one. maybe i should just wait until i get my tax return and buy brand new. either a tmaxx or a revo.

If this guy had upgrades, then I would say this is the better deal. But, you can't really go wrong with a new rig...then you KNOW what you have got.

yea, that's probably what i'm gonna do. just didn't feel like coughing up $500-$600.

I bought mine from a friend for $400. Only reason I did that was because I trust him and I saw it ran. He babied the hell out of it and put a ton stuff into it like upgraded pipe, front and rear RPM A-arm kit, roll cage, 3 sets of tires, big bore shocks, aluminum battery box, aluminum skid plates ( i already bent the hell out of them though). Plus a bag full of more aftermarket parts he didn't put on it and all the stock parts. Also an Onyx 100 fast charger for the EZ start.

I would say buy it for the $160 if you can see it run. Even new your going to be dropping a bunch of money into it getting rid of stock parts.

Although, if you are lookign at a new truck for $500, then you could just get this one from him. Even if it wasn't the best shape, you can put ALOT of upgrades on a Tmaxx for the remaining $340 that you would have spent. Abrand new motor through the Traxxas power up program would probably only run you $85, and the rest of the money could be spent on RPM arms, aluminum etc. Even then you likely wouldnt be spending a total of $500. You know what I mean? In the end, you will have a better than stock Tmaxx with a bunch of upgrades on it for the same price as a stock rig.

But like I said, get the guy to run it for you and that will give you an idea if it is worth it.

I thought that to, but I figured if i'm gonna spend a big amount of money, i might as well buy new. plus i think i want a revo instead.

There is ways for only a few dollars to waterproof servos and all the electronics and see if there is aluminum on it or if there is any upgraded parts then it would be a good deal.
