I got my son (9) a GS Storm RTR plus for christmas and though I missed the break in the weather and my chance to break it in, I am hooked! I think I may have found the hobby for us. I mean how can resist when your son comes up to you and says "let's make it go faster Dad!" Gives you that warm fuzzy feeling inside!

Now to my ?'s...
I was thinking about building a Storm-UT for myself to run with the boy. The thought there is that we could share MOST of the same spare parts and since I am new... only have to learn 1 car at the start. As I said he is only 9 so I will be doing and teaching and he will be learning and watching most of the "work" While this sounds reasonable to me... is there anything I may have overlloked in the way of cons to taking this approach?

Secondly, has anyone pieced together an SUT from a bare chassis? I had thought about going about it like that. I know it will cost a lil more in the long run but i will be able to pick and choose what mfg'r ect. Basiclly add my hop-ups while I'm building. Should I just get the BOM/Parts List for the truck order all the parts I want and get to building? This seems logical to me...

And lastly, Sould I just say screw it and order the CE?

Thanks for the time and any words of advice! ~HW

I am not that familiar with the GS line up, but from what I have read from the mags and this forum, the SUT is a pretty good truggy for the price. It is a kit, which makes you learn this hobby a little better and will help your son understand how these things piece together as well. I like your idea, though. One for him and one frmo the same basic line up for yourself, although it is different in many ways. Two worlds of fun, less parts to stock.

You have the right Idea, most of the parts are interchangeable. I would not recommend building one from scratch, Get either the kit or the rtr and replace with better parts as you break. Alot of the hop-up parts are not necessary, and/or they are overpriced. Also if you build from scratch or a kit you have to buy a radio, servo's, and engine. Whereas if you buy the rtr you can get away with the stock radio servo's and engine until you are ready to take the plunge and buy good stuff(which can be expensive) for sombody just starting out.

uh, i wouldnt, as the prices have dropped, if u want a SUT, go buy the pro truck kit.

u'll run into issues w/gear clearances and the limited amt of adjustment on the storm chassis. the sut chassis while identical has longer motor mount holes to allow that bigger gear. the parts to make it a trug just cost too much vs gettin the pro truck new. (think 360 @ rc-nation).

any more help u need on that, lemme know. GS junkie here.

Ult... I got the boys buggy broke in today without any problem. But now I HAVE GOT to get me 1! I had to go by my LHS today to get a temp gun and grabbed the 10.2005 issue of RC N1TR0. There is a test/write-up on the SUT CE... what is your thoughts on that kit? (and anyone else who cares to chime-in) After reading the artical the only thing they suggest would be needed/recommended CNC steering Knuckles (Fironi?) and the dual-disk brake set-up from the PRO SUT. Then I can hit the girlfrind up for the Native Racing Tomahawk Suspension in a little less than a month for the B-day! ...a couple hundred on some fancy "picture takin" billet rims. Hey WTF... gotta make sure that "dads" ride is WAY cooler than his. At least for a few years!

But if anyone has either an SUT CE or the Tomahawk Suspension I would love to hear and real world info you could share!

And I am glad to hear that I thought the Storm/SUT idea out with reason.

Thanks everyone! ~HW
