Hello. I'm new to nitro rc and this forum. I built some electrics years ago but I decided to get back into the hobby with nitro. I just bought a Savage and an Aquacraft SV 27. I bought them both used. They seem to run well. My problem though is with the savage. It seems to have good top end but nothing off the line. I know I don't have it tuned perfectly yet as I'm learning but I think my problem is more in the transmission. The guy I bought it from said he had it set to shift real early. I have tried several times to adjust it to shift later but without any results.. I'm not familiar with two speed transmissions so I figured I would ask for some help. I set the slipper clutch like the manual instructed. It will slip with firm pressure. It was set almost too tight when I got it. Although again I'm somewhat new to this so I might be wrong. When I first looked at the screw for the adjustment on the shift point it looked like it was all the way in, which would make it shift real late wouldn't it? Not early like what seems to be happening. It almost seems like it's stuck in high gear. I'm a long way from pulling any wheelies anyway. I've tried adjusting the screw several times withno change. Thanks in advance, Nick.:surrender

I'm thinking that your problem lies with tuning. When the truck is even slightly out of tune, it will not shift regardless. If I were you, I would tune the truck first, probably be resetting the needles to factory and then giving it a re-tune, and the once I got it tuned I would start adjusting the shift point. I thought something was wrong with one of my nitros because it wouldn't shift, I finally figured out that it was just not in tune just right.

If it is out of tune would it still be in high gear like it seems to be? Wouldn't it just start and stay in low gear and not upshift? Or would being out of tune cause it to be stuck in high gear?

if your getting nothing off the line, try leaning the low speed needle, or richening the hi speed needle, try the low first
if you can take a video and post it, we can tell if its a tuning issue or not by hearing the engine run

I agree with leaning the LSN. If you're getting good top end, your HSN is good. You will notice a difference when the LSN is leaned a little at a time, but keep an eye on your temps. Once it starts to launch from a stop, you'll be able to hear when it shifts, even if it's in just a foot of travel. Once you know it's shifting, you can fine tune the shift point.
For now, just start leaning the LSN about 1/16 at a time till the performance improves, and keep us posted.

It's definately improving but still not consistent. I ran about 4 or 5 tanks through tonight messing around. When I check the temp where should I aim the gauge? I have usually been pointing it down the head at the glow plug. If I aim it at the side of the motor below the cooling head it reads higher. I have seen temps anywhere from 180 to 315 depending on where I point the gauge. It still hasn't shifted yet. The back of the truck is starting to squat but it has never lifted the front wheels. I have been running without the body also so there is lots of airflow.

Just a thought but have you made sure your slipper clutch on the spur gear is tight enough? These seem to come loose alot and will stop your bottom end wheely torque.

Myself, I do not set it at factory. I tighten it up and back it off a little over a quarter turn and mine both have had great bottom and top end with no problems.

I agree with homeydclown, my slipper is really tight too. But you can tell if its your slipper, because the engine will be revving to beat hell and the truck won't be moving very much. In my opinion I think your trans is stuck in 2nd gear. If the truck is running really well and very fast at top speed, and idleing, it should have quite a bit of snap even if its out of tune a bit, at least mine does, it just acts up a bit and doesn't idle sometimes, when out of tune, but it should not be bogging down unless you are so rich that its puffing out blue smoke.
My Savage has stuck in 2nd gear before and I just snap and burp the throttle to try and get it to kick down, this has mainly happened in winter (-20 celsius). But it also happens now and again only because the tranny likely needs a service or cleaning.
Also if it was out of tune so bad that it wasn't even changing gears, the truck would not be pulling much for top speed, and it would sound like its over-revving.
I would try to get it to kick down to first or take the tranny apart and look into it.

My 2cents

good luck and let us know how you make out.
