I had my 3.3 out today.Well, everything was ok till i had a pretty nasty wreck. The resonator pipe fell off. Me being stupid couldnt figure out how to shut the truck off,i should of just put the pipe back on! Well the truck starts rpm'ing reallllyyy high(no backpressure i guess?),so i tried to choke it off with a rag, that didnt work. Well the truck finally shut itself off. It stripped the gear that go from the motor to the tranny it looks like,on the tranny side. Luckily i did'nt seem to hurt the motor zingin the rpms like that! Scared me to death!

Well i know it's hurt. The gear is stripped and the truck wont move when running now.

so replace the gear! lol

so is it the muffler pipe that feel off or the pipe that connects your muffler to the engine?

i just can't understand why that would strip your gears and stuff!

unless something got into the engine while that was off and it like jammed the piston and stuff!

Only thing I can tell you is if you want to be sure the engine isn't hurt is to pull the wrenches out and tear it down. These engines aren't that difficult to take apart and put back together. One question though, why didn't you shut it off by pinching the fuel line?

My pipe fell off yesterday for the first time. Scared the crap out of me, that thing sounds ANGRY without a pipe. I did pinch the fuel line however.....

I had my pipe fall off on me one time the wire hanger broke right at the set screw. They do sound angry without one. I did manage to pinch the fuel line to shut it off though.

I tried to pinch the fuel lines, but with the gear tranny gear stripped,it sent the RPMS to the moon! The motor had no resistance holding it back leaning out like that.

Yeah mine did that too when my pipe fell off. Reved so high I thought it was gonna scatter the engine. So to make sure there was no engine damage I took it apart and checked everything. Turns out nothing was damaged and in fact it ran a lot better after that, not sure why though.

yea same here. my pipe came off my 2.5R one time and it accually ran better after... weird  . My spurgear also stripped because i hit so hard my throttle arm got twisted and jammed it. so it was also stuck at WOT with no pipe... scared the s!#* outta me!! i was accually too freaked out to put my hand down there to pinch the line, lol. you havn't heard angry untill you here a nitro with no pipe at WOT... lol.

newbe mistake

even though iam new to rc i have learned a couple of things. most likely the frame flexed caused your gears to strip. but double check the screws. i found the stock engine mount on my t-maxx that some of the bolt holes were not taped right, so i bought an aftermarket mount and used VERY long screws going up. use only medium or small screw lock-tite. do NOT use high strength. here is an inst set for setting gears. some of the experanced guys think it is good. [email protected]

here is how i adjust gear backlash. most receipts are .002 inch. dillions, k/mart ect. most copy paper is .004 inchs. set the gears so .002 paper comes out very wrinkled, but NOT torn. the .004 paper should tear in to. then if the gears run smooth you are good to go

to keep your pipe on in a crash. get a piece of hard rubber and cut it so it has to be pushed between the pipe and the radio box, then use tire glue to hold it in place.

I never had a problem with the gears till the pipe fell off.. I'm actually stumped as to how that happened? Maybe the lack of backpressure and the high rpms, the gear couldnt handle it??

What caused mine to happen was the four bolts that hold the engine to the mount worked loose which broke the pipe hanger, and at the same time let the engine move around and eat up the spur gear. thank god for loctite!

If this happens again, can i just unscrew the glow plug and it'll shut off? Or is that dangerous??

Please Don't, Unless you want to see a glow plug hit you at 500+ Feet per second. Think of you engine having mini explosions but, instead of containing it the glow plug turns a rocket powered by that mini explosion. Anyway I don't recommend attempting the removal of your glow plug while the engine it running.

The Fuel Line Pinch is a Standard for shutting down the engine, as well you can plug the exhaust though its not the most applicable way.

I would of simply just pinched the fuel line, but the gear to the tranny was stripped. So the engine had nothin holding it back nd the rpms zinged through the roof when i leaned it out. Also tried plugging the exhaust and it would'nt shut off either.. Guess i'll get a rag next time and try to put the resonator back on while its running if this happens again.
