Got my spanking new Savage XL yesterday. Will break in this weekend. anything I need to watch out for in particular.

Any screws I need to tighten before I run it?

Get some blue loc-tite and apply it to every metal to metal screw.
Check that the throttle linkage is working properly before you run it.
Otherwise bepatient with the breakin and have fun! You'll love it.
Triple check the gear mesh too. As little play as possible is ideal.

Thanks,

have done as you said and broken in already. But broke the rotostart shaft pin on the engine end for some reason. Will order a new one now

Common problem with these engines. To prevent it from happening again do two things.
Loosen the glow plug a 1/4 turn before starting the engine when it is cold.
The other thing is to preheat all new engines for the first 10 times you start it. This allows the piston and sleeve to expand and greatly reduces stress on the engine.
it laso makes for a better piston sleeve breakin resulting in more power and longer engine life.
I always do the above, and I never wear out OWB or break starter parts.
