*sigh* OK, I started it up this morning and it was idling very high. I wanted to let it warm up before I messed with any needles. Then out of nowhere the idle started to race very very high and kept going up until it finally cut out. It did this a bunch yesterday too.

I can't even get a to a point where I can mess with the needles cause it keeps doing dumb poop.

WTH am I doing wrong with this thing?!?!? I am try to keep my cool over it but every thing I do seems to be screwed up and screwing the truck up more..... It can NOT be this hard.....

Have you checked for air leaks?
And is fuel flowing well to the carb? It almost sounds as if the fuel path is blocked.
And when was the last time you reset the needles to factory settings? When I get frustrated, that's the first thing I do. Go back to factory and start over again. That may help.

No air leaks that I can see and I have really good fuel flow now. This is happening at factory settings too. The only needle I can't be sure of is the LSN. This needle is a real pain to get back to factory settings. Any idea how to do this? The way the manual says doesn't cut it.

Sounds like too lean on the LSN or an air leak. Have you sealed the backplate and carb? Even if the engine is brand new it does not hurt to do this as over time you will need to anyway. Also, make sure the screws holding down the head are tightened evenly.

OK, I looked back and see you have the Savage 25. To reset the needles, first reset the idle stop screw so that there is approximately 2mm gap (per the manual) showing between the slide and carb body. Then, while holding the carb closed, turn the LSN clockwise until it just hits bottom. Don't overtighten or you ruin the needle seat. Then turn it counterclockwise 3 full turns. Lastly, close the HSN until you just feel the resistance and back it out 4.5 turns. That puts you back to factory. Now, if you still get the fast idle that goes up until the engine dies, it's either an airleak or an obstructed fuel path. Check your fuel lines for any cracks or pinholes. Check your fuel tank to see if there is anything blocking the fuel outlet. And you also may need to see if there's anything blocking the fuel in the carb. But you'll have to take the carb apart to check that.

I have the needles back to factory settings now it wont start at all....I guess I am going to have to pull the hole damn engine apart. I dont think there are any leaks and I dont think fuel is being blocked. I guess I will find out when I pull it apart...

OK.......I have an air leak....Pics to follow shortly....This sucks cause it looks like I need a new motor now.....

That does suck, maybe HPI will replace it, if not you can get a new one cheap through their engine exchange program.

Well, as you can see in the lower right hand corner there is a alan screw missing from the corner of the roto start. It is missing cause the housing is busted off on the motor side. So I can't get a tight seal between the roto start and the motor housing. I have never touched these screws and have no idea how they got broke because I havent really been able to keep this thing running long enough to use it.

What do you guys think? New motor? Fixable? Yell at HPI??

Contact HPI and tell them what has happened. Bare minimum I expect they'll send you a backplate. This is a pretty new truck, right? From what I've heard, HPI is very good with their customer service. So step 1 is to call them. And don't yell. You attract more flies with honey than vinegar.

Yeah just bought it toward the end of last summer. It looks to me that the backplate is part of the whole engine housing. How can they replace this only without replacing the whole motor?

Well, that's up to them to decide. The back plate does come off. It's not part of the crankcase. If you remove the Roto-start, there are 4 more screws under it which hold the back plate on. Anyway, call HPI and see what they say. Worst case scenario you'll have to buy a backplate. But check with HPi (949-753-1099) and see what they say.

I see. Well I just called them and left a msg for them to call me back. We shall see what happens. Glad I finally found the problem though. Thanks for all your help!

I'd try to send them your motor in exchange for a new one. That is messed up.

good luck!

i had this happen to two engines. They started and reved really high and woundnt stop until i turned them off. I seled everything and it fixed em....

I feel your pain. I will probably get out of the hobby because I have dropped a ton of money on my savage 25 and it just dont run, or when it does something else breaks or quits. I have never had a day of running and been able to shut it off and go home. 5 minutes in something quits or breaks. two buddies of mine bought revos and abuse them almost on a daily basis and they have no problems I just dont have the money to go buy a new one. Anyway good luck with yours.

Well, I just talked with HPI and they tried to make it sound like its my fault it broke. Saying I dont pay enough attention to my vehicles. They are going to send me a new back plate so we shall see how it goes.

I may end up selling this headache and getting something I can actually have fun with.

or you could find a busted old worn out 25 and gank the back plate.. then your all fixed up.. (that is if hpi doesn't come through)
