New spur and reverse module

Last night I finally got a chance to install the reverse module that I got when I bought my Savage. I had to put a new spur gear on as well, mine got chewed up last time I ran it.

For future reference, is there an easy way to remove/reinstall a spur gear or do you have to remove either the engine or the transmission?

To replace the spur you just have to remove the engine, remove the nut holding the spring on the slipper, dissasemble.
 
Sounds easy enough...I was just a little hesitant on removing the engine, haven't done so yet and was worried about the difficulty of it. I think I need to adjust my gear mesh anyway, is that accomplished by moving the engine one way or another?

yea 4 screws from the botton removes the engine.. when you put it back on you will have to remesh it
 
I found it easier (though a few more screws) to remove the left side TVP and pull the trans out. The trans is bolted to the TVPs and there's no adjustment, so if you pull the trans (gear swap, spur replacement, reverse install, etc.) and don't touch the adjustable motor mount screws, when you put the trans back in you'll have perfect (or in my case "factory") gear mesh.

I know season veterans will say pull the motor, but for someone who has yet to replace a stock engine and hasn't dealt with spur/clutch mesh, I found this the easiest for me. Not having to deal with the mesh at all! :D
 
if you pull the engine PUT BULE LOCTITE on the bolts or you WILL lose them, then you will be re-replacing your spur cause of the flex in the motor between the chasis
 
I find pulling the engine much easier than pulling the transmission, especially if you have the reverse linkage.
 
Yeah, that reverse linkage was a pain to get in there correctly. I finally got it though, and took it out yesterday to try it out. The reverse works great, I'm glad I put it in there.

I know, you hard-core racers out there are yelling at your screens going "Why do you need reverse, you can't race with it?!?" But I just bash, don't race, so it comes in very handy.

As for the spur gear I put on....well, chewed up that one, too. In my haste to get out and try reverse, I forgot to re-mesh the spur/clutch bell and mangled it within 2 minutes. That's another couple of bucks down the drain!

Oh well, live and learn...

Experience has tought me to ALWAYS carry extra CB, Clutch shoes, Spur, GLow plugs, Airfilter sponges, fuel tubing, and a whole bunch of other things. Nothing ruins a great day of racing/bashing faster than breaking a part and not having a spare on hand.
 
Well I don't have the reverse module yet, but I can see where the linkage to the servo would probably be a pain. Just offering a suggestion for those that cringe at the thought of adjusting gear mesh...

I hope to install a three speed conversion kit and reverse module over the winter, so I'll test my theory again then! :D
 
I like the reverse module and I am a racer. It has been in my truck for about 7 gallons and it has proven to be very durable. Make sure you only shift when holding the brake. There is no additional drag in forward and only a very slight drag in reverse. Adjusting gear mesh is easy after you have done it a bunch of times. I just eyeball it through the TVP and check it for feel while spinning the spur. I am not really interested in the 3-speed.

Yeah, I've been looking at that 3 speed, that looks sweet. I dig the reverse so far.

And I should be getting the new spur on Saturday or Monday, so I'll drop it in then and do the mesh correctly! Getting tired of putting new spur gears in!
