First off, this is NOT a question, just a heads up. I got a new savage a couple of weeks back, and took all the good stuff off of my old one and put it in the new one. This included the borken in and smooth tranny. The new tranny went in the old truck. Acutally I just swapped the guts, not the cases. First problem encountered: the tranny case screw holes were 95% stripped out. Case material came out on the screws. Since the side plates pin the halves together, this hasn't been a problem so far. Second problem: the shift point set screw did have the loctite mod done at the factory, but there was so much in there I couldn't turn the screw with the allen wrench unless I pulled the tranny and messed with it up close, which I did. Third and most bothersome problem: whoever goobered all that loctite in there got some on the shifter itself. It would not engage second at all. I tore the tranny apart again to find this out. Got the lever freed up and reassembled the tranny. Went running tonight with a buddy and had to spend the better part of an hour tuning the shift point. Ended up backing the set screw way out (to like 6 turns or so) just to get it to shift, then had to slowly run it back in to get it to shift at the correct time. I guess that the shifter was working the loctite out at this stage, but it finally started acting right by the time we packed it in.
So, if your new savage isn't shifting, and everything is assembled correctly, check to see if the lever is free to swing out.
Whitt....
