Ditch the shelf queen look and get the baby nice and dirty!!!

HI,

I just got it in the mail yesterday.
Now I need to buy the accessories before I can take it out and have fun bashing.
I have a $20 gift certificate from Tower so I am going to get some glow plugs and fuel and whatever else I need.
Right now its snowing outside so I have some time to wait till I can take this baby outside to do the break in anyway. I need to figure out what else to buy so I will be ready when the weather warms up a little.

1. Should I buy the traxxas 20% or 33% fuel?
2. Should I get a Venom Smart Temp Fail Safe? http://www.venom-racing.com/
3. Please recommend stuff that I should buy now so I will be ready.

Thanks!

20% is what I would run for longevity. 30% is said to tune easier..
So it;s your choice
Slightly Easier tune more power / for less engine life.
Normal to tune, a tad less power / for more engine life.

Thanks Lykan!

I ordered the 20% Traxxas fuel. It seems the safe bet and its less expensive.

I didn't want to just outright say ..go get 20% because it's just my opinion.

Then again I think you made a great choice My niehgbor bought some 30% fuel, and didn't change the tune.. he just ran it.. it may be coincidence as his engine was old, but the piston came apart on him after two tanks..

BTW what percentage of oil is in the traxxas fuel you purchased?

I found personally that with a oil content higher than 16% you should use a hot glow plug, and with a lower oil content a cooler plug. This seems to make tunning a lot easier for me.

You know, I bet Traxxas doesn't say about the percentage they put in but they do say that its a blend of castor and synthetic oil. It's probably pretty good stuff and its the only one they will honor the warranty with I think. So I figured why not.
I plan to use glow plugs like the Traxxas super duty and/or the duratrax LR3 long hot.

I realy can't wait to get started breaking it in. I hope it warms up soon.

Do you use WD-40 or after run oil or both?
I bought after run oil but in the Traxxas video they use WD-40.

BTW, I have the Venom smart temp failsafe on order.
Do you use a failsafe?

Are you using tubes in audio amps?? I didn't know one could still get tubes. I wish the old tube linear amp I had for HAM radios worked but oh did it give off some heat.

The heat is the best part in the winter. I am so cold right now. I think I’ll go upstairs and fire up the audio rig after I write this post to you. He he.

You should get some tube amps! I can order you some hand made or you can look in Audio magazines and see whats out there. There is a lot to choose from.

Tube audio is the only way to go if you actually want it to sound good. Solid state (transistors) are ok but it always seems like a cold imitation. Very dry and lifeless. Tubes are just so realistic. Did you know that transistors are just switches (like a light switch) but tubes are actual amplifiers!
Well, I do admit to having some solid-state amps too. The Krell KAV-300i you can see in the picture but its just so convenient. Don’t have to wait for the tubes to warm up.

Yep, they still make tubes. Mostly in Russia and China and Eastern Europe where they still have all the equipment to make them. Western Electric in USA still makes them too but damn they are expensive! Great European brands like Mullard are long gone.
Those Mullard tubes you see in my amps are NOS (new old stock) and very rare and expensive. Can’t be replaced. But its ok, China will be making newer and better ones now. Tube audio has gotten really big again! Check in hi end audio magazines, you will see.

Ah yes!! Good old tubes....I have a China made tube int. amp with China tubes (KT88), powering a pair of old school Thiel CS1.5 speakers.

I'm actually trying to sell some audio stuff so I can pick up a REVO.... :)

I've had a set of Bose AM5 and the old series LIFESTYLE, never like them too much, not very musical. Most audiophile I've spoken to do not like the brand.

For what the Bose sells for, a pair of pretty high-end speakers can be had, but then again, I've never listened to the 901s; so I can't really speak for them.

Electrostatic:

I run the 20% Traxxas fuel in my Revo and it runs great. Little tuning required and more than enough power for my needs.

I also run the heavy duty medium plugs from Traxxas. I used an MC-59 from McCoy for a couple of tanks but I was detonating pretty heavy. I found out later the MC-9 is better for the 2.5R.

Also, I have tried an OFNA failsafe, and an XTM failsafe on my Revo. Will not work. Makes the Optidrive throw the trans into reverse, something I do NOT want to happen if it suddenly hits WOT. If the venom works let me know. I might get one of those.

Am I the only one that noticed that theres like 25 grand ouf audio equipment in the background?.. I see Martin Logan, Krell, Velodyne, Transparent..not sure on the Mono blocks..but man...nice setup

a4drvr:
Good eyes! And thank you for the compliment on my system. You got it all right except the cables, which are made by MIT. http://www.mitcables.com/

The Tube amps are hand made by the owner of TS Audio. All point-to-point hand wired and he even makes the transformers by hand. The sound is out of this world. Blows my Krell out of the water and that’s saying something.
The smaller speakers next to the Martin Logans are Triangle Comets. They would be a great example for
Johnbrumbaugh:
who posted early about bose 901 of what can be had for much less cost than Bose speakers but which will sound dramatically better. Bose put most of their money into advertisement not the products.
I have heard a few pairs of Bose 901 but would not recommend them. Instead focus on a pair of small bookshelf size speakers that you can put on stands. Make sure they are both sensitive and efficient (not the same thing).
That will make sure you can buy the best sounding amp and not have to get the biggest muscle amp. Kinda like a light car with an efficient transmission and a great little race engine will beat a monster truck with a big block. You are looking for speed and articulation. I would highly recommend speakers made by Triangle.
Now if you have a little more (much more) money and space for your speakers, the martin logan speakers speak for themselves. They are just awesome in every way.

Crunch: What is the name of your tube amps? I think integrated amps can be a great way to save cost and simplify your system while still getting fantastic sound. If you do sell that amp, then I advise the next one you buy to be another integrated but using better sounding tubes such as 300b. I import Tube stereo equipment all hand made from TS Audio. I’m the only authorized dealer in the USA. I have integrated using the kt-88 tubes but much prefer the lower powered but better sounding 300b tubes. You give up power for quality. But its ok if you have speakers that are easy to drive. Remember sensitivity and efficiency and you can’t go wrong.
But lets get back to RC cars,

Revo Rancher: Thank you for the fuel and plugs info. Yes, that MC-59 is a bad match. The best I have learned about so far are the Traxxas super duty long, DuraTrax LR3 Long, and the O.S. LC3 Long which I think is the same plug but with a higher price. All three will work perfectly. Remember you need a long plug with medium heat not a medium plug. You will lose compression and power with a medium length plug.

Also, regarding the fail safe. It goes between the optidrive and the servo. Make sure not to install it between the receiver and the optidrive. That would probably account for the problem you were having. Please check and let us know.

Electro:

How do you install it between the Optidrive and the servo? The plug going out from the Optidrive is two plugs in one port? Or am I crazy? (it's been said before!)

I just double-checked it after reading your post and I am sorry to inform you but yes, you are crazy. Ha ha ha.
Take another look. Get back to us after you check it out.
I hope it all works out for you brother. It’s a pretty simple plug it in between sort of thing. The servo plugs into the fail-safe and the fail-safe plugs into the optidrive where the connecter from the servo would have gone.

Take care,
Electro
