Hey guys.. I'm new to nitros and this looks like a good place for info so, hi :)

I've been wanting a gas truck forever, started with a USA-1 electric a long long time ago and have been screwing around with electric buggies and street cars ever since :)

Yesterday I finally cracked and ordered a Savage 25 RTR, (did I make a good choice or what?? :)) and I've been searching and searching for what all I'm going to need to get started so I could just get it all in one order, my local HS is useless... this is what I came up with so far..

I already have a 7.2 volt and charger for the rotostart...

a couple extra OS A5 plugs
Reverse module and servo (being an electric guy I need my reverse)
Glow plug igniter
a fuel bottle, and fuel filter (which I don't know if I need cuz the 25 has one built in the tank).

I haven't yet ordered a failsafe cuz there seems to be some differences... Any suggestions?

Is there anything else I should pick up?

Oh yeah... I almost ordered some HD dog bones too but they had them in 3 different lengths and I wasn't sure if they were all for the same chassis or maybe an extended or what..

pathfinder-
1. Welcome to RCNT
2. I didn't see fuel in your list, you are giong to need that. I'm sure you already know that :naughty: I think you have the basics covered, since you have been into RC for a while, you probably have the basic tools covered.
3. Failsafes. I like the venom one, but the dynamite one is also good. Either of those two and you should be set.
4. Since you already have the charger, you might want to pick up a reciever pack if you don't already have one, saves $$$ in the long run
5. You picked a nice truck, I'm not sure of the dogbones since I don't run a savage, but I do know that the stock ones suck.

Again welcome to RCNT

thanks.. the only fuel I've found so far is Dynamite Blue Thunder 20% but I haven't ordered any yet, but from what I've read it's pretty good..

PS I'm in Canada and I don't *think* anybody can ship it across the border so I'm a little limeted. MY LHS said he won't even attempt to order me any 20% fuel... $%&*!! But if I had a plane well it's a different story..

yeah blue thunder is pretty good. You might want to try and buy that from a LHS, even if yours sucks, the reason being you will have to pay a hazard tax, or something like that, on shipped fuel. Just something to consider.

I offered to buy a whole case(4 gallons) and pay the hazmat fee.

He still won't do it... the guy has problems

Why is the LHS person saying they wont order it? Are they recommending you go with a lower %? Or are they just not going to order that brand?

I use Trinity 20% in my rides and its been very good to me.

He claims that if he orders fuel he has to order like 10 cases to make it "worth his while", so he only orders plane fuel because that's where the market is...

We use to have a really good hobby shop and a RC club but for some reason the store went out of business then the club dissapeared..... now I have to go elsewhere.

If I had some capital and knew a little more about everyting I'd open one myself and put that dork out of business.

pathfinder - welcome to RCNT!!!

check out some other LHS's in larger cities around canada. Goto an online phone book for toronto, or vancouver, or something like that, and order some from there. that should help. also - check out www.xxxmain.com - they are based in canada.

about the only thing i can tell you is to either ask alot of questions here, or read your manual thoroughly regarding engine break in. THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT, and can mean the difference in becoming a nitro addict, or becoming shy of the nitro hobby.

good luck and welcome to the dark side

You sound like you have almost everything you need. You will want to pick up some double A dry cells or a set of rechargeables to get the radio and receiver operational. I'm sure you already knew that, but they were not listed.

Other than that it sounds like the list has been pretty much covered.

Welcome to RCNT.

Get the in-line fuel filter even if the tank has one. Cheap insurance.

With the in tank filter can it be removed for cleaning. Could be a big problem if not.

They are kind of stuck in there. If it gets clogged, it gets clogged.

The Savage 25 RTR (according to the HPI website) comes with updated standard dogbones. These are not the HD silver ones that tend to not break. During breakin and before you really start beating on it, these bones will be ok. But when you really start tuning it up and getting crazy mad air, you will break some dog bones.

The difference in the sizes are 1) the long ones are for the outdrives (4 required, or 2 packs of 2), 2) the middle length is the center rear main shaft, and 3) the shortest is the center front main shaft (1 of each).

A better solution to the silver HD bones is a set of CVDs. They tend to wear the drive cups more evenly, and transmit more power to the dirt.

Also, Welcome to RCNT!

Whitt...

Hmm get custom made dogbones. They are cheaper, stronger and will last alot longer then the CVDs.

Thanks for all the good info guys.. Can't wait until the thing actually shows up!

oh yeah!! get a fail safe, if you dont get a fail safe get a daiper, cuz when that thing takes off on you for the first(and mabye last) time your gonna poop yourself! Good luck and welcome to rcnt.com!

DOH! Those $%&$! at Towerhobbies! Now the truck is on backorder after they trick me into ordering!
