i am new to nitro engines, and have an OS CVR engine (new), and have a query. I have read about engines and understand that the engines are traditionally tight when new. I am unable to turn the crank over tdc even without the glow plug fitted. Admittedly I have not used a spanner or anything to hold the crank. I have just relied on the spacer that normally grips the flywheel. I have left the engine with "after use oil" in the cylinder for over 24 hours but still am unable to rotate the crank beyond tdc. I don't want to strain anything, so do not want to apply too much force.
Any advice would be appreciated.

To help with starting, some people loosen the glow plug 1/4 turn to help relieve compression. Another thing to do is to preheat the engine with a heat gun or hair dryer.
 
Thanx for the reply. I have already tried heating the engine, and removing the glow plug completely. According to the supplier, it will be tight and will loosen with use. I have spoken to a couple of guys who run nitro planes and they think that there is a fault with it.
 
Sounds like to me your conrod is broke or something else is definitely wrong. If the glow plug is completely out you should be able to turn the flywheel with ease.

Heating the engine up with a hair dryer always works for me with tight engines, and on cold days. As for getting it started, try loosening the glow plug, if it is still stupidly tight I'd take off the backplate and check the conrod and piston...

There is difficulty moving the crank even with the piston not covering the exhaust port. I got the engine from eBay last week, I think I will be returning it for a refund.

Put the flywheel on and turn it over by turning the flywheel,
i have just tried with the flywheel fitted, no glow plug, but it is still very tight. Everything is well lubricated but sounds 'dry'.

The Con rod is still connected to the piston as I can see the piston trying to move, I am cautious about removing the backplate as it may invalidate the guarantee.

If it is all lubed up and sounds dry I would assume a bad bearing....send it back!
 
Hi Folks,
One of my colleagues has had the head and backplate off, there was plenty of lubricant in the system, and around the piston. When a spanner was applied to the crank, the piston started to lift the liner. When I get home tonight it is going back to the supplier.

It's ok :)
 
on a new nitro engine the cylinder pinches the piston very tightly, due it being new and not broken in, it is normal for a new engine when turned with the head off to lift the cylinder sleeve up and out, due it being a tight fit, you can tell how good a condition a nitro engine is by how much the sleeve pinches the piston
