hey guys.. i just put a new nova ns12s5 engine with my engine... yea, i have a starter box... but i'm having trouble actually getting this thing started. i put it on my starter box for like 5 seconds - 10 seconds, but no luck... anybody ever had problems starting a brand new engine?

sometimes it sucks really bad, but then others they start right up. first of all get a brand new glow plug, then make sure the ignitor is charged all the way. if the engine has alot of compression then take and loosen the glow plug a hair. then when it starts tighten it back. make sure u got fuel getting into the engine also.

New engines are hard to start because the cylinders are very tight around the piston. I talked about a break in technique where you warm up the cylinder first to reduce binding here:

That post also talks about using a plane propeller, but that is more than you need to do. Just warm the cylinder up to about 200 F the first few times you start it. It really works, check out the picture too.

My normal routine when I first get a new engine, I take the glow plug out, test it to make sure it's good. Make sure I didn't get a defective one. Then I put a few drops of after-run oil before I even turn the piston over. Never know how much, if any, oil is in there. Put the plug back, then fuel up and start it.
