i really need help. i just got an sts.28 engine. when i first started it, it idled really well and never died out. however when ever i give it hard gas it cuts out all of a sudden. i can run it around at very low speeds but when i try going WOT, it will die out before i reach half throttle. it dosnt bog down like its too rich, it dies suddenly. please help.

have you finnished breakin?? maby reset needles?? can you give us a bit more info??

i have ran about three and a half tanks through it. it is really easy to start. maybe 2 pulls. idles really well.

I'm not trying to be funny, but do you know what really rich sounds like?
Is it spitting a lot of fuel?
Is the head real hot?

It's probably one of 3 things.

To rich
To lean
Air leak.

If it idle's well, it's more then likely the high speed needle that will need the adjustment..

the head doesn't get too hot. a drop of sweat dosnt dissolve realy quick. it isnt spitting fuel out. however there is alot of exhaust smoke coming out.

Ok. If your doing the water drop test, you don't have a temp gun.
That was my next question.
If you have "A lot" of smoke, you might want to try leaning it out a little.
Make sure you do it in very small stages (1/8th turn at a time).
See if you have an improvement.
If the engine starts to get too hot, go back to where you were with the settings, and get someone to help you.

As stated, I'd check your HSN and maybe try leaning it out a bit, but before doing that, check or air leaks. One place I found one when I had a similar problem was the carb nut had come loose. When my truck was just sitting and idling, or putting around slowly, no problems, but when I jumped on, it died. Came to discover, after many frustrating hours of working the HSN and LSN, that when I opened the throttle, the servo would pull the carb throat up just enough to let air sneak in. Tightened it up, set my needles back to factory and off it went!

Overall, sounds like tuning so with some patience I'll bet you can dial it in! Good luck!

if it's an air leak you'll hear the engine surging.....sounds like he's just too rich to me.....tam if you pull th ethrottle fast it dies...but can you pull the throttle slow at first till you hear the engine clear out and then nail it? that's a pretty good way to tell if it's too rich...if it just dies out anyway it's too lean....

Spend $20 on a temp gun! Its worth it especially when breaking in an engine. You need to be at 200* otherwise you are not breaking it in you are hurting it. Once you have it all broken in you can see where it runs well with great smoke then use that tepm as a refrence.
