New buggy, just ordered - need recommendations :)

Not bad; just don't save that burger for the build, lol. You'll love the build, just remember to dry fit everything, and force yourself to take breaks every hour or so. I did mine in a 16 hour stretch, and while it was fun, I felt the effects for a week.

But it was ooooh so worth it! :)

lol heh. Well I can't start the build till the Fioroni gets here and I'll probably do it then. If I hand carry the part bags they might get annoyed at the 'sharp' contents but if it looks like a buggy they shouldn't complain....

The Build - Part One...

I collected 2 packages yesterday (after being skinned alive on tax) and set about the build...

I've made a silly mistake and it has come to bite me now - can you spot it?. Due to the mistake the build has been temporarily halted as I cba 'stripping' the whole front section down to correct it haha! All this means is that my buggy is going to be very very lightly...well lighter :p

All packed away...

I've also decided to install the servos and recevier I get into the savage I picked up, and sort out the Mugen fully, once I get home in July. This gives me a month of fun with the Savage in England ;)

Look at the 1st pic. You'll notice that I've fitted the outdrives fron the centre diff on. (they got the sides groved out for the brakes)...

Rather than taking the front apart, taking the front diff apart and redoing the whole mishmash (easily a couple hours worth of re-doing it) I just ordered another set of center outdrives, as functionality wise they aren't any different and it wont damage the front. Actually it's a great way of shaving 0.01% more metal off your buggy I'd think hah. The replacement set should be here by Friday/Monday, and I just have to rebuild the centre diff, which will take all of 5 -10mins and continue with the build.

I actually made the mistake in the pic above, d'oh...guess I fell asleep at the wheel :p

Whoa there tiger!

On most buggies the F/R outdrives are shorter and lighter than the centre outdrives. You may also find that your F/R driveshafts now bind on the outdrives at full suspension droop or compression. On the MBX-5 the proper F/R outdrives have a considerable chamfer machined on the inside to allow the drive shafts to articulate. The centre driveshafts don't articulate so the outdrives don't need the chamfer.

Exactly, without that chamfer/bevel on the inside edge of the outdrives (compare a center diff one with a front diff one, and you'll see... just look end-on), just as niggle said; the driveshafts will bind, or worse, saw the ends off.

ARGH.... Niggle thanks for that info. Ouch... Guess I'll be re-doing the front then hehe. /me decides to wait for power cordless screwdriver :p

All my hudy tools are at home hrm...

...Actually I just decided to re-do it. I was shocked that I was able to get the front diff out without 'too much' work. Took around 5-10mins tops. What was slightly mess was sorting out the diffs. Once I got the outdrives swapped, re-topped them up correctly and spent ages on the centre diff as I found it was 'binding'. Anyways, I have sorted it and got the center diff fitted and the chassis braces. Probably continue the build sometime later today :)

Cheers, Nigs... :)

During the build of the Mugen I realised that I made a silly mistake and decided to strip the front section down to get to the diff. I was shocked that I was able to do it in under 5 mins :-o

I sorted out my mistake and proceeded to install the center diff and chassis braces:

The build process has been halted here for reasons I will elaborate later on.

Today these items arrived \o/

I then proceeded to install the WERKs clutch, which is quite impressive...

The Savage and radio stuff are currently on route, and I should have the radio bits by Friday and hopefully the Savage as well. I plan to install the servos and Spektrum Rx in the Savage and this is the reason for the 'buid' halt. Also I find it is easier for me to hand carry the chassis (MBX) + parts rather than install the mill/pipe etc as that makes the buggy occupy more 'vertical' space inside my russack. More updates later on ;)

I should know more later today, once I see the Savage I'll decide if I am to continue the build or not heh. Either way I'm not too fussed as I have a job to attend to for the next month in London and till that's done I won't have time for anything else...
