I always paint on and try stuff on a pane of glass I keep in the corner of the shop. When your done, just take a straight razor blade and clean the paint off.
 
just out of curiosity since I am a newbie to R/C.....what are those plastic tie wraps on the top of your heat sink for?
 
They keep the head from getting scratched on those inverted landings. They act like skid plates.

For $80, you got off cheap! That may be one of the nicest lids that I have ever seen.
The guy has talent. thats for sure!
