I picked up a jeep body to paint, and here are the pics of it.....
I learned alot in the process, and expect my next one to go much smoother. I haven't sanded the wheel wells yet, so they are not smooth yet. I also had problems spraying the black shadow, as you can see, I needed a compressor with more psi. I haven't airbrushed anything since high school, which was a long time ago, so it took me a while to get back on that horse so to speak.....

Nice job.
The black is a matter of taste.
Some people like a thin line and some like it bigger.
All and all I think it looks great.

Now get to work and put that truck back together.

no....the mask on this one was bought. I am in process of doing an excursion that I hand drew the mask for, I'll take some shots and upload them.

Great job anyway. Shoot, I have not touched an airbrush in forever years. I got to go out and get me one now.

thanks....i personally don't like the black, but live and learn.

I am trying to get the truck back together, I am putting in on a new chassis, and need to rebuild the shocks. I am also thinking of a FOC and a new tranny case. I also have to install the new Fantom, but after X's recent experience, I am a little leary. I want to do it all at once and be able to drive the thing.

Well hopefully you dont have the ABSC sleeve I think that played into my issue.

As far as the body nicley done I like it and think the black looks good. As to painting some of us have the patients and well some of us dont. I personally can't invest that much time it. I single coat it or pay to get a nice one done. I am suprised at how many pretty good painters we have on the forum though. X

The body looks great.

What brand paint, how much did you thin it, what PSI were you running and what number needle were you using?

I found, with laquer based (Pactra is what I use) that I need to use a #1 or #2 needle, 1/3rd thinner bare minimum and a PSI of about 24 to get tight shadow lines.

I also learned the hard way. I didnt thin it enough and had it clogging up in the tips creating all kinds of overspray. I also had the paint atomizing before it hit the body which creates these funky cob webs!!!! Messy to say the least. Pricey lessons learned but fun none the less!

Keep up the great work

Christian-
great questions.
Paint:I used faskolor paints, didn't thin them at all. Faspearl blue, red and charcoal. I also used faschange gold on the front of the aztec design that I backed with white.

Brush:I used an old badger 150 dual action internal mix brush that I got in high school. I think the tip and needle were both fine, but I am not sure on that. I plan on buying correct needles and tips for the next one- that way I'll know for sure. I want to be able to do more detail work.

Compressor: I bought an airbrush compressor that didn't have enough psi for the faskolor paint. I tried thinning it, but it still didn't work that great...was spitting and clogging the tip, so I got a compressor at costco for $129.00 that will be more versitile, it has a three gallon tank. I sprayed most things around 30-40 psi, which worked great for coverage, but I still need to figure out what is best for detail work.

The main thing I learned is a few light coats are way better than trying to cover all at once. Patience is important.

Sounds cool! One thing I found for certain was the thinning. If its clogging too much either one of two things are happening, if not both. Paint needs to be thinned more and PSI needs to go up.

The recent body I shot I did at about 17-19 PSI. Thats where I realized on the fine lines that the PSI needed to go up and the paint needed to be thinner.

I dont use Faskolor so I dont know any info about the paint. I can however say that the Pactra works AWESOME! Sticks perfect, didnt run and smells good too hehehe

So you are a nitro sniffer and a paint sniffer too?

youl sniff anything to get that buzz won't ya.... whats really fun is epoxy resin on a semi enclosed porch...then of course theres the fact that I glued myself to several different things....ooops....LOL!!

NICE BODY!!!!!!!! hey chris how hard is it to air brush????? might just have to get me a portable compresser(sp) and add amoisture trap and pressure regulator...

Considerring I had never airbrushed a thing I would say it is fairly easy providing the following:

Get the right gear
As a TON of questions
Take everyones advice (or at least most of it!)
Experiment on 2 or 3 litre bottles
Take your time
Be patient

and most of all

HAVE FUN!
