I was installing an engine in an r/c yesterday with EZ start. When I went and started it up, I noticed that the spur gear was spinning backwards. I couldn't figure out what was going on. I would hit the throttle and the spur gear would spin backwards which of course didn't move the wheels. The engine also was not running right and kept quitting. I found out that depending on where you put the ez start wires you can make the engine spin clockwise or counter clockwise. Turns out I had the ez start wires backwards (pos. was were the neg. should have been) and that was making the easy start motor spin the wrong way which started the engine spinning the wrong way. Once I switched the wires and the one way bearing the ez start spun the other way which made the spur gear spin the right way and the engine ran like a top. I never knew you could do this. You learn something new everday. :hehe:

note, I switched the one way bearing around the wrong way when I tried to start the engine and nothing happened. That allowed it to start the wrong way.

nice... bet you were confused for a good little bit hugh??? atleast you know what to watch out for next time l.o.l.

yea, I thought the engine was bad for a little while. I ended up replacing glow plugs changing the tuning and everything. It would idle by itself but once you hit the gas it would bog down and die. It was shooting fuel mist out the carb where the air filter mounted. I hope I didn't do too much damage to it. Once I figured out that you can change which way the ez start spins by changing the wiring I knew what had happened and realized that I wasn't crazy when I installed the one way bearing the same way it came out. The engine ran great afterwards and I was able to get a quick tune on it.

Now if I could have called Hugh Ash afterwards I could have avoided all this :)

Traxxas needs to put a little + sign on the ez starter motor. I did in permenant marker on all my ez start rigs afterwards.

Never thought there was a reason for a Red positive wire and a Black negative wire huh?

well I figured it would just be like installing a battery in a tv remote. If it's right it works if it's not it won't. I figured if traxxas didn't have it marked on the motor maybe it didn't matter. I tested it out and it worked but the one way bearing was obviously not catching, so I took the one way bearing out and installed it backwards. Next thing I knew I had an engine running backwards.

leave it to youguys... l.o.l hey atleast you get the idea of what i am saying... well sometimes.. l.o.l

Peppy La Hugh? So did you have your one way bearing in backwards too? Because unless that thing is shot it should have just spun and did nothing to the engine. Just like a Roto start if you spin it the wrong way with a drill nothing happens....

Yea It was backwards too. I put the one way bearing in the way that it came out. I wired up the ez start. I tested it to see if it spun. It spun but I could tell that the one way bearing was installed the wrong way because it was not grabbing. Going against my better judgement and knowing that I installed the one way bearing the same way it came out, I flipped the one way bearing around the wrong way. This allowed the engine to start in reverse.

I think about 90% of the OWBs I have seen have an arrow on the side that should face outwards pointing in a clock-wise direction. Your bearing should always turn the engine in a clockwise direction as looking from the rear. Just for future reference.;)

iam an old guy i get confused easy enough, but a reverse running engine is to much
