I'm a new owner of a .21 Savage. I picked it up for $200 and all it really needed was brakes and some motor mount screws. I really like the truck but one thing puzzles me. Sometimes it seems to shift into neutral. This usually happens when it's cold and the idle is a bit fast. I can shut the engine off and re-fire it and it the trans will work just like it's supposed to. If I'm not mistaken the Savage trans is not much different than my RS4 trans (just bigger) so I don't see how it's possible to even be in a neutral gear. It should either be in first or second. Tell me where I've gone wrong........

I don't have a Savage but if it's like the RS4 tranny, I wonder if the one way on first gear is slipping. I acutally just stripped my RS4 2-speed and regeared it so that's the first thing I could think of. 2nd gear should be disengaged anyway. And the first gear adapter has a one-way in it. That might be the problem. When it's in "neutral", none of the driveline is moving, right? So it's not a diff issue or anything further down the line. Just free thinking I guess, but that would be one of the things I'd look at....

if its got a revers module fitted its possible to be in neutral u may need to replace the module as this happened to me when it was warn out

Latest update.... it did it again tonight. And I discovered that the drivetrain was locked up when it happened. I went to push the truck and it wouldn't move. It wasn't the brake that was holding it because I keep mine trimmed so that the brake isn't applied at idle. But the thing was totally locked up. I was going to pull the body and see if the spur gear was turning but it went into gear before I could get the body off. And this thing acts like a T-Maxx when it does go into and out of gear. You know what I mean? Ever seen a T-Maxx sit there and go into and out of gear? It's irritating to me.......... What's up with my Savage? I know someone out there has had this same problem. Let me hear from you

Sounds like something in the drivetrain definitely. The usual culprits are the diffs or the tranny. There may be something that's binding one of the gears like a small chunk of plastic or something. Also check the axels to make sure no bearing are blown out. The bad new is that you may have to take the diffs or tranny apart to find the problem.

It's gotta be in the tranny. The diffs are good and it's not a problem that keeps me from running. It just happens every once in a while, usually when I first start up
