I am new to nitro and bought a second hand monster, it needs some attention (quite a bit tbh) but I want to get right into this hobby, when i recieved it everything was fine engine wise, there was a bit of wear on the pull started cord and when I was starting it the inevitable happened.... snap, I don't think I will have much problem replacing the starter but what I am worried about is the fuel still in the engine, i have heard that fuel left in the engine can damage it due to condensation, does anyone know how get this fuel out or if it will damage the engine. No manual came with the truck.

Nitro fuel when left in the engine and dried up gums up, if that is the case it is best to disassemble the whole engine and clean it inside and out and maybe even install a new piston and sleeve and rod just so you know that the engine is now in good condition. one thing about buying a truck with a used engine is you really dont know if its been taken care of or beaten into the ground.. Or you could even just buy a whole new engine and do that.

But yes leaving fuel in an engine while it sits is not good for it especially if the engine is not in a controlled temp area. if its in a garage where it gets very cold then you most likely will get alot of condensation in there and water in engines never is good obviously.

Also for future reference always when you are about to finish your driving for the day just drive till your tank is empty and then when it stalls out just try to start it again and then the fuel will be out of there but also when the engine is dry you want to use some form of lubricant to keep everything lubbed and free from ceasing. I personally like use 2-3 drops of 3 n 1 oil in the glow plug hole and 2 drops in the carb then crank it over and let that oil move around in there for a few cranks then its ready to sit untill the next drive. Some people prefer to use after run oil or WD40 but i believe its just personal preference. they all do the same thing really.

To get exsisting fuel out I just remove the glow plug, drain the tank, flip her over and turn the motor over a few times by hand. Seems to do the trick. Then a few drops of after run oil, cycle a couple more turns stopping at bottom dead center then on the shelf she goes.
 
Thanks addict, yeah I have been looking at new engines tonight. Don't want to go get one and blow that up whilst breaking it in lol, mechanical thing like gears, wheel etc that I can do, but the complexity of such a small engine with all the needles and general needs that they have is unbelievable, it is unreal, but loving it ha ha. Say I am out bashing about and something breaks and I do not have a spare and there is still fuel in the tank and engine, is there an easier way than a full disassemble to get out the fuel out?
 
^ another correct way to do it if you dont wanna drive through a whole tank.

*EDIT* was talking about chief for the other way to clear your engine.

Also after you get used to tuning and repairing it actually becomes very simple and easy to do.

when i ment with the fuel in the engine when its gummed up you should disassemble it and clean it out. But if its cleaned out and running and break something where you can't run the car i would do as chief says. just take off the glow plug and flip it around with a rag and crank it over a few times so it clears out but make sure when you do that, that the tank is empty or when you crank it over more fuel will go in.

You do not have to disassemble the engine every time your done driving for the day. The most you need to do is remove the glow plug and crank it over with that rag and a few drops of oil and its done for the day.

Thanks chief, how do I drain the tank, or is that me being silly, in my case the pull starter broke so I wouldn't be able to crank the engine round, a full disassemble like above. Your answer is very helpful, it is little things like these that I need 8-)
 
You can just turn the engine over by the metal piece that's between your clutch bell and your motor by using your fingers to rotate. This us also how you get it to bottom dead center.

To get fuel out of the tank without wasting it is easy. I assume you have a fuel bottle correct? Simply empty the contents back in the gallon jug of fuel so its empty then use it to drain the fuel tank by squeezing it then insert into fuel tank to suck the fuel out. This is also how I fill my fuel bottle quickly and without spilling fuel by trying to pour it.
 
How do I know when it is bottom dead centre? Yeah I have got a fuel bottle and I shall get some after run to keep the engine well oiled 8-) off to the lhs for the pull starter today 8-) I'll keep you posted thanks 8-)
 
Bottom dead center, as the name. Implies, is when the piston is at its lowest point. At this point it is no longer in the pinch sleeve.
Gather a cotton swap, a Sharpie marker, glowplug wrench, and after run oil.

Start by removing your glow plug. Now take a cotton swap and pull ALL the cotton off one end. Drop it down through glowplug hole. Now that metal part between clutchbell and engine i mentioned earlier is called the flywheel. Tour going to rotate this and watch the cotton swap and stop when it goes to the lowest point. Now grab the Sharpie and mark the flywheerl where you can see it so you'll know in the future. Remove cotton swab and put some after run in there, spin flywheel a few more times, stop when that mark is back where it should be indicating bottom dead center and your done.
 
thanks again buddy :) got the pullstarter yesterday installed it with new glowplug, found the stock settings for the needles online and started tunning the engine. It was all very well untill the throttle servo decided to just open up and it went straight into the kerb smashing the steering arm mount :( bad times :( any ideas why the servo went crazy? i have seen it doing it when the engine isnt running and I'm just doing some pre run checks
 
Interference. Servo fail. Hard to say. Easy to prevent. Failsafe will prevent this. Also a throttle return spring.
 
total pain so it was, i thought the failsafe was for range but i suppose this is just my lack of knowledge lol, i have just turned it on there is nothing electronic around to cause any interference and the servos are both going crazy if i go to put the brakes on the servo just moves back and forth, do you think replacing the servos are to blame?
 
Sounds like a short. Check all your wiring, a wire worn to exposed bare wire that then touches metal will make it go nuts. I try to run all 2.4 in all my stuff to avoid interference. When I take mine to far they just roll to a stop.
 
i should of thought of that one being an electrician lol, what i need to do is get a full strip down and check everything, make sure everything is running fine and moving correctly before i start bashing about, get i wish list and slowly get the thing going to way it should, you have been a great help to me pal :)
