OK, I'm starting to assemble the clutch on my 4.6. When I put the clutch nut on, the groove doesn't line up with the clutch springs. The nut has one flat side and one conical side. I assumed that it should be mounted with the flat side toward the flywheel. But that puts the groove for the clutch springs well below the springs. Should the nut be installed with the conical side toward the flywheel? The manual shows a different nut and isn't very clear on it.

So it's ok if the clutch springs bend down a bit? Or should I shim it out so the springs are level?

On my MT2 if you put the clutch springs in a certain way they fit better , see if you can turn them over to get the spring end closer to the grove

On my 4.6 the springs bend down a bit too, I've had no problems at all with the clutch.

i had the same problem. i put the retainer part of the spring on the hex and i went through 4 spur gears. put the retaining part of the spring in the half pipe looking section. it wont line up exactly but that is how it goes. that is the only illustration of the instructions that isn't clear. i just snapped a picture since i had my motor out for you so you dont go through 4 spur gears before you get it right.

one of the moderators may want to make this pic a STICKY for future k46 builders

i got the same problem on my .25 for my buggy.!!! let me know if you figure it out.. I'm thinking of putting a shim under the nut to help out..

I went ahead and did like arawak. I just made sure I pushed the spring down into the groove. It kinda sucks that it doesn't line up well. I guess I am expecting more precision in things like this. But it will have to do. I thought about shimming the nut, but if you do that, then the clutch bell won't cover the clutch shoes and that's worse than misaligned springs.

wow thanks for the pic I just started on the engine tonight and was wondering about that myself

For whatever reason the manual that comes with the kit really doesn't give a good indication of how the pilot nut goes on...I think this stumped most of us newbs. If you go to HPI's web site and look at the electronic version of the manual it has a better picture

actually that picture shows a pretty normal clutch nut. by forcing the spring down like that it keep the shoes tight against the flywheel and doesn't allow thier faces to rub the inner face of the clutchbell. the only thing i would recommend if its not included in the kit, is small washers, one behind each shoe so that it doesn't bind on the face of the flywheel. pretty much every one of my 8th scale clutches looks just like that one, and they all preform flawlessly.

this is the picture that came with my 4.6 ss kit, but mine was much newer b/c bruce said that he got them from hpi on like monday and I got it in on friday, alson I noticed that things were packaged inside the bod differently, jsut a little something that i picked up on so maybe the newer kits have diff directions, and packaging
just maybe, does anyone else know anything about this??

oh and this stickers that are with it all say savage ss s-25 and 4.1cc engine wtf Doesn't it come at least with 4.6 stickers of something like the ones on the box??

You should have another sheet in there that have all the 4.6 decals. Did you open the packaging up yet...it may be behind the S-25 sheet.

actually i only half-ass looked for them so I don't know I don't think I will put any of those unecessary stickers on it anyway I don't think it needs to look like a NASCAR
