i picked up a set of hcr aluminum primary gears in a trade. when i replace the gears do i also replace the forward only gear with the same alloy? in addition i also got the rrp steel top shaft set as part of the deal. the extent of my trans work has been the plastic foc.

tips would be greatly appreciated.

For optimal performance and reliability you should match your alloys however it isn't necessary.

It would be of help if you could list the parts you want to use.

so then, is it bad too mix metal gears and nylon gears in the tranny?

HCR-03284 is the 3 piece gear set.

the RRP topshaft set is:
8525 T-Maxx / 2.5 Maxx Hardened Steel Topshaft 17/22t

I'm thinking maybe go with one or the other. Looks like either way I'll have to spend a few $$

how much did all that cost u? i am looking to get my tranny all metal after i get the cybermaxx kit.

i traded a used dynamite chassis and braces, used sirio pipe and some stock suspension parts, none would have been used again. I also sold him my used 2.5 and sirio 18 for a very good price.

the hcr gearset is $75-100
the rrp topshaft set is $40

yeh, now if i only knew what i was doing....

Its my opinion that you will be ok with that setup. Mixing Steel and aluminum usually isn't optimal but you should be OK. Just remember that the harder metal will eat into the softer causing faster wear than metals of the same hardness. I would use a thin coating of lithium white grease.

This is a little bit out of my scope of knowledge and would like for you to consider other peoples advise as well.

i should be i little clearer in my posts. i'm thinking about going with the hcr or rrp gears. i don't think that i want to mix them. my cocerns are the same as yours (from my race car wrenching days) what i'm really needing to know is should i replace more gears than just the primary ones? ie., forwar only and ??? i've no real experience beyound the foc and that is the plastic one from traxxas..

The way I look at it, metal is better, more expensive but better.
Two ways to look at it. Take your time spend what you have to spend and never worry about it again or use what you got and replace it when it brakes.

I blew up a nylon FOC the first time out with my CyberMaxx. I still have some Nylon gears in my trany that haven shown any wear. I will replace them with alum. when they go.

Decide how much you want to spend and go from there.

thanks ed,....i'm thinking that if i buy the forward only gear for the hcr setup, i'm ready to go. the problem is that most of the lhs's around look at me like i'm from outer space when i walk in with my trucks and start asking for parts or ask how do you do something.

i like to start a zero and work my way up to a couple of bucks.

my new sig should read,.....why build one when you can build 2 for twice the price!

if i understand the exploded view of the maxx trany................

the topshaft gearset (rrp steel) rides on

the 2 speed gears(plastic)

the primary forward/reverse gears (hcr aluminum) ride ride on

the foc gear (i'll replace with an hcr aluminum one)

so no aluminum will touch steel. if i need to replace the 2 speed gears then i can replace them with steel. someone look at this and give me some feedback please.

the 2 speed plastic could be toast...

You got it.

I have never had an issue with the 2 speed gears. I'm sure given enough time I will but not as of yet.

Is this going in a .21?
If it is, Get an RRP double slipper for the (E)- Max 66t and go with a larger clutch bell 20-24t. Doing this will take a huge amount of torque off of the transmission and difs and you will still get the same gear ratio.

eddy

thank you for checking on my work. it's a picco 26 outlaw. the e maxx double slipper, i hadn't thought about that one. i was wondering how to gear higher. the cb is a 22 or 23, i can't remember.

thanks again.

The E-Maxx slipper will take smaller gears than the T-Maxx setup.
They do this just for that reason. The E-Max creates a lot more torque than the .15 pro or the 2.5 and the smaller gear puts the torque on the engine / motor rather then the drive train. I know the Nitro purists don't want to hear that but its the truth.
