First of all, if you want to get into the NASCAR RCNT Fantasy league, go here.

Next. I haven't really gotten into NASCAR much in the last few years, but I was watching the first Gatorade Duel, and what is with the team drafting. Is this what I am to expect to see if I watch any races this season, is 40 cars in pairs?

Also, explain qualifying. In dirt track racing, there's race for position, say, top ten of twenty to the feature. Or there's timed qualifying, followed by heats (qualifying race). What I got from watching the Duel, is that you qualified for the Duel, then you raced the Duel. No problem. What confused me, was that there was people who made it, but guys that finished ahead them who didn't. Why?

All longer tracks will be all about drafting, it might start out with team drafting but it will turn into "who do I draft the best with" real quick.

I understand that, but there was 12 pairs of cars, rather than a line of cars.

It just happens to be the fastest way around right now with the current regulations. Doesn't bother me at all. IMO, it looks like the drivers have to work a lot harder to get to the front. I like it.

Bill, there are only two racetracks where they race like this, Talladega and Daytona. There is an advantage of the draft at other tracks but the racing is only heavily dependant on it at these two racetracks.

Daytona 500 qualifying:

Standardized qualifying only buy the front row. The two cars with the fastest individual laptimes will start on the front row granted they do not make any changes that would mandate that they start at the rear or incur any penalties likewise.

The Duels:
Following the standard qualifying results... The odd number qualifiers (cars that qualified 1st, 3rd, 5th etc.) make up one "Duel" race, the even number qualifiers make up the other. The finishing results of the duel races make up the inside and outside starting rows for the Daytona 500.

It's slightly more complicated than that due to past champions provisionals etc. but that's the general jist of it.

Thank you. We are under Winter Storm Watch for Sunday, so I might actually watch it.

The nationwide race was pretty good. I've been looking forward to today for a long time.

I caught the last wreck of the truck race Friday night, if todays race is anything like that, it should be fun to watch!

I've been into speedweeks. I watched almost all practices. Something I normally don't do.

Trevor Bayne, born in Knoxville Tenn in Feb 1991, making his second Cup start and first start at Daytona. It was refreshing to see a new face in Victory Lane.

On another note, I found this vid kinda funny...

The kid that I pit for used to race karts with him, Kyle (my bud) used to tour down south for big races, but he was on his way out of karts when Trevor was about 15-16.

OK. So I'll admit, I'm starting to become a bit frustrated with how these races are playing out. Not that the racing wasn't good last night but what is the deal with the lack of competition recently. I don't know if maybe just a few races are sticking out in my mind or if it's more prevelant overall, but to me it kinda seems like the overall level of competition is starting to suck. The only reason I have to say that is the lack of cars finishing on the lead lap recently. Now I know it's common to have less than half the cars of the field finish on the lead lap at short tracks, but 9!? Out of 43 cars and the best speedway drivers in the country only 9 of them can manage the 400 laps with the winner? What gives?

I did a bit of research.. Here's a short list of the most recent Richmond races with thenumber of lead lap finishing cars noted. In the last 3 races the avg. is just under 14, in the 8 races before those the avg. is just under 22. Without doing anymore research I don't think Richmond is the only track to see this dropoff of competition. Is this due to a lack of testing vs. previous years???
