I recently moved to Arkansas from WV where i had been living. Since i lost my savage xl not to mention my dog! in my divorce, I started the hunt for a new truck, but since a new truck wasn't in my budgett I ended up buying a very well taken care of savage .25. Heres the deal: I was thinking of changing this truck to a savage xl, I know HPI makes the conversion kit or just replacing the .25 mill and plastic pipe with a honkiin big block and a tuned pipe, can't really afford both so if i take this truck apart to change it to a xl, what am i getting into? can i handle this myself? I would like to hear what kind of job it is to do this! NEED ADVICE!!!!!!:whhooo:

I put nice .28 in my .25 and still run the crap out of it. The only other thing is needing to upgrade to bulletproof diffs.

Converting to an Xl isn't that hard, you can do it

Ok guys after much consideration heres what i've decided: i'm going with the Axial .32 grey head engine, ofna 086 pipe, and so i can run my new terra-pin tires, a hpi 17mm hub conversion set with dog bones. i think i'll wait on the xl conversion. what do you guys think?

Sounds good but might I try to talk you out of the Axial engine? I would really steer you towards another engine. What is your budget for an engine? There are a lot of choices out there that are more powerful and reliable engines for close to the same price.

If the Axial ends up being your only option, you may want to throw some quality bearings in it. I read about bearings being one of Axials main issues. That was a couple years ago though.

I run the Ofna Force .32 in my XL and really like it. The 5.9 that comes stock on the XL is based off the Axial engine design and quite frankly I wasn't impressed with it. It ran hot was a pain to get it to hold a tune and it has a 3 needle carb. As do all Axial engines and the mid range needle has a tendancy to fall out in the middle of a run. The only complaint I have about the Ofna Force .32 is the cooling heads are kinda brittle but they are a lot more user friendly than the Axial engines.

hey thanks, my budgett for a new mill is about $150.00 give or take, I had a axial .28 spec 1 (green head) in my other truck. The con-rod got egg-shaped and i had to replace it, it ran great, lots of power, easy to tune, but my buddy replaced the pull-start after he broke it when he borrowed my rigg, he left a spring in the crankcase, when i started it, it ran for about 15 seconds and quit, I found it jammed between the crank and the block when i took it apart. funny thing, after i put it back together the motor would get stuck, like it was hung-up or something, we started it for kicks, but we could never tune it right after that. Sad ending to what once was a good engine.....!! anyway, i really like the dynamite BIG RED engine, was wondering if anyone has this mill??

GUESS what, I've just been told by my lovely wife that i get a LRP Z.28 Spec 3 for christmas!!!!!!!! HOOOORAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The truck I had to sale due to my ex- wife draining my bank acct 3 months straight had a LRP Z.28 in it. Man that mill was the bomb, easy to tune, awesome power, I can't wait to get this one, Man I love this hobby!!!!!!!!!!!

Yes I have had 3-4 of the LRP and had nothing but good luck with them. What part of AR are you in now? I lived in Cabot around 4 1/2 years ago. There were a lot of great construction areas to bash in.

I live out at Fairfield Bay now, outside of clinton, I haven't been able to find a good hobby shop here yet. Does anyone know a well-stocked Hobbyshop sround Conway or Littlerock Arkansas. I guess it's not a major need with Tower Hobbies and a laptop handy, but it would be very nice to meet some other rc gear heads around here. Theres a rc airfield close to where i live. They say Marks hobby in Littlerock is about the best. I heard theres some guy in Conway selling Redcats, but since I had such a miserable experience with my Volcano sv ( my first rc) If you hit a bump very hard the darn thing just went off by itself, radio wouldn't control it. it broke every time i ran it, and parts were a pain sometimes. anyway love to find a LHS thats well stocked with HPI parts. mackdaddy!!!

Yeah I think he is still open. The one I used to go to in Sherwood is closed down now...I had only been to Mark's a couple times back then. Now I have to get 99% of my stuff through the mail. We have one guy one the site BigJay that is North of you in Marshal I think, might find out where he gets his stuff.

thanks, hope he sees this post, love to find someone with some knowledge of the area hobbyshops. I order from tower hobbies alot, but it would be nice to have something local for the small things. guess i gotta get out and explore this area more.
