I got bought a savage 25 today and am breaking it in right now. I am on the first step and the engine idle really fast and when it warms up it kinda sounds like it is overheating or something like that. Do i just need to adjust the idle screw or what. Does it come from the factory with the needles set to breakin settings.

The needles are set by the factory for break in. Complete break in steps are in the manual. I'm in the middle of breaking mine in as well and am haaving issues to. Hang in there bud.

I am noticing a trend with people getting new savages. I truely think the RTR thing is just a ploy to get you to buy. Everyone who buys a new savage has problems with the damn thing.

RTR should really be RTPUO (Ready to piss you off).

Seriously, why in the hell is it so damn hard to break these things in and have them run the way they are meant to be??

But it keeps on revving up with the slide all the way in and making cracking noises. It will eventually rev all the way up at idle.

geardigger, its so hard because the engines are only about .25 cubic engines, are capable of running 40,000 RPM, and run on nitro methane. If your 1:1 car was getting the same hp per cc as these nitro engines are I bet the engine would last about 5 minutes, and be a PITA to run, and cost an ass load of money. They are very touchy but once you get them right they are a blast and run great and produce amazing power for their size. Just stick with it...I know how frustrating it can be. I had a RS4 3 SS and it took me a month and half to even start the engine let alone tuning it. But once I got it and learned how to tune engines it was a blast. I since have ahd numerous engines and doing fine with them. It just takes time to learn like anything else.

When I had my Savage SS with the .25 mine also ran high and sounded like it was overheating. You may want to try and richen the LSN just a bit to keep it cooler and the idle down. Loosen the LSN 1/8th of a turn and see how that helps.

They are pre-set from the factory for break in settings, but I've come across several that just weren't right.
When an engine revs very high at idle, without the carb opening, it's usually a sign that the LSN is way too lean. I agree with AC48, that you need to richen the LSN. At idle you want to see a fair amount of oil spitting out the exhaust during the break in. You also need to adjust your idle screw for the new LSN setting.
Do you have a temp gauge?

i also think it might be a lot of bubbles in the fuel line. What do i need to do about that. I just got it yesterday

If you have bubbles in the line your engine would probably just stall. Thats just a matter of getting the fule out of line and try priming it again with no bubbles.

That's why it keeps leaning out. You need to find the source of the bubbles.
There's an air leak somewhere.

what you do is hold the exaust while you roto start it a couple times, then let off. that clears the fuel bubbles and pumps gas i had the same problem.
since the savage .25 has no primer the fuel pumps from exaust compression.

I'm on my 2nd tank of breaking in and everytime I slowly pull the trigger the engine cuts off. Do I need to lean the HSN a bit? I havent adjusted anything yet.

With the wheels off the ground, give it quick short blips on the trigger. You need to blow some of the 'snot' out of it. Each blip should give you a little better rpm. If it wants to stall out, then lean the HSN about 1/8.

Any adjustment to the HSN also has an affect on the LSN since it is the main fuel supply.
When you lean your LSN, you need to keep a close eye on the temp at idle, since leaning it will cause it to go up.

With the wheels off the ground I try to slowly pull the trigger and it cuts out. I leaned the HSN enough times to about 1 1/2 turns and it continues to cut out when I try to pull the trigger. Do I need to lean it out more? I stopped for the day to wait for more advice. I kept the fuel in the tank until tomorrow, I hope that was an okay thing to do.

It's your LSN that needs adjusting. Since everything is probably out of whack now, I'd reset the needles to factory and start over. Don't worry, you didn't do anything bad to the engine. Just take it easy and keep an eye on the temps.

BTW, if the engine blows up it's not my fault! :jk:

Baldie, reset the HSN to factory specs, then tell me if your getting little spits out of the exhaust when it's idling. You should get droplets on your finger tip after only one or two seconds. Small droplets, not a lot of oily content.
When the engine has idled, and is up to temp, pinch the fuel line and count the seconds till it stalls out, then we'll start from that point.

On my very 1st tank of break-in, I got alot of fuel coming out of the exhaust. It actually soaked the box that it was sitting on and also got splattered a little on the chassis. Was this an issue? Could it also be a possiblity that the needles were correctly set at the factory which is why I'm off track on tuning?

Mine did the same thing i was wondering about that too

I never go by the way the engine comes from the factory. I always set it to factory specs before break in.
