my head busting truck

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

i got savvy running yesterday after changing from 16% to 20 % fuel ..

i loaned mate hpi temp gun and after a good run about, i checked temp which was 253f

i went to get a temp gun this morning but couldnt get hpi one , so only one they had was a fastrax one ...

started up truck this morning , had blast around as wanted to get temp down to around 220f but when checked it was 266f going up to 270f..

i tried to richen and got it down to 220f 230f but started to get bit baggy as if was to rich, not changing gear that so of thing .

really stuck now , not a clue what to do ,,

i let truck cool down and as it says in hpi booklet put it back to base setting from closed hsn 4 and half turns out and lsn 3 turns out from closed ...

after doing this mate told me i should hasve done this as it will affect the truck big time . ???

any thought as how i can sort this mate .

Set both the LSN and the HSN flush. Then turn the HSN in one turn lean (clockwise) Then lean it out a little bit at a time.

I never got my savage engine to run right at 220f, mine always liked 240-260.

I'm assuming you followed the break-in process already, correct? If so, then you need to set the needles back to factory, then tune the HSN for performance, temperature and smoke then tune the LSN for throttle response.

Once you get the HSN dialed in to the right temperature (actually, 230 is just about where you want it), pinch the fuel line as close to the carb as you can and count. If you get to 3, 4 or 5, then your LSN is about dead on. Anything earlier and you're too lean, anything longer and you're too rich.

Just so we know, what engine are you running and did you follow the break-in process?

yeah . did all the break in when first got it .. 2 tanks on idle .. 2 tanks half throttle passes and 1 using full a bit ..

it was running great until a put 3 speed gearsbox in and changed fuel from 16% to the 20%

other guys quote " put neddles to flush and turn one full turn in "

will that not be to lean as book states from full in turn 4 1/2 turns out ..
then start to lean ..

lsn 3 full turns out from closed and start to lean ..

the engine is the 4.1

you never stated which mill so I'm asuming the stock one. i tune my mills to 250-260 then dont run well anything under 240ish. maby that is why its running poorly.

No, it won't be too lean. I have the 4.1 as well and I run the HSN about one turn in from flush (about 3 1/2 turns out) and the LSN is about 1/4 turn in from flush.

Start both needles at flush then tune from there. It'll take some patience to get it dialed in since you're going from 16% to 20%, but you'll get it.

I've just saw in book the its says from flush but the dvd say from closed ....

I'm from uk was not sure what you were meaning ... sorry ..

so i turn both needles anti clockwise till flush, then clockwise once. start it and turn 1/8th turn until sounds and feels around about right ... check temp and it should be around 230f ... EASY ha sounds easy

by george i think i got it ... ha ha
ill try in morning ...

thanks very much ..

that is flush with the outer housing, maby just me but that sounded confusing

When I was in Las Vegas (hot dry desert), I could not get my F4.1 to run well under 280F, sometimes hitting 330F! :O It wasn't too lean, because I would always get a nice smoke tail.

Back in Hawaii, my average temps are somewhere around 250F-280F for best performance.

so even if temp is up at the 260 270f , as long as there is a nice blue trail ,, i should be ok ..????

i did the water droplet test in head and it fizzled fast as anything

same here i my stock nitro star 25 won't run good unless the temp is around 240- 270. and i was also was wondering wat is the safests high temp it can reach if it is still showing a good trail of smoke?

A good smoke trail is really the key. If you're getting good smoke and seeing some small drops of oil coming out the exhaust stinger, no matter the temperature, you're doing alright.

right , todays the day guys .. both needles set to flush . both 1 full turn clockwise.. I'm going to leave it on stand for a while , it warm up...

right its started up ,, had to turn idle up a touch .. kept cutting out ...
its spitting oil out exhaust , can also see bit blue smoke on idle too ????

then you're running too rich and it's safe to lean out the engine quite a bit. when you can see blue smoke at idle you're running REALLY rich... normally you only see it from 1/4 - 1/2 throttle.
