my friend is thinking on getting a hot bodies tornado (sp?) and the dude at the lhs said that an on-road car will break more than his stock 2.5 maxx. is this true?

Yes, at some point no. Some touring cars are built like a tank. Depending on manufacturing quality on parts, some can break easier than other. For example: AE Ntc3 make most of their parts from composite graphite, which is made for light weight, not to be flexed. They will most likely be easier to break than a Mtx2. It also depends on how the driver drives, a new drive can break 2 arms in 5min than a pro drive can break in 5 race days.

ill tell you this....after a few months of surveying and asking questions, the concensus is that you break alot less driving on road.
some argued that you break alot on-road too, but the off road wins hands down.
now there is also a difference in what you break with off road being the more suspension related pieces like arm and shock.
on-road seems to have a different line of broken parts.
its seems gear related and engine related parts are broken more by on road than off road.

this is my opions based on surfing. not scientific data was used nothing other than what I've been reading. this isnt to say one wont break this or that, just what breaks more often.

i think that you also break more with off road, just because of the nature of the driving. if you're off road you are driving more than likely "off road". where there are all kinds of holes , sticks ,trees and other htings to smash into or flip over on and break things, i break a lot of stuff with my off road, but then i just replace it with less breakable things. my on road has also broken , but thats because it slammed into a light post at about 40-45 mph with no bumper (i wonder why it broke? ) ... the parts broken are generally different in nature between off and on road, so it really depends on what your friend wants to drive, what he wants to fix, and just what he likes to do i guess.

Dont forget, there is something to be said for sailing into a curb at 60+ mph with a vehicles ride height only being a few mm..

The ties serve more of a purpose on an off road truck where the head sticks out of the body. They are there to help protect the head from scratches if you wind up upside down.

i disagree with that i have lot more broken parts on my offroaders than the on road 1 pulley and 1 steering knuckle on onroad..

5 broken a arms on off road 3 knuckles 2 bent shocks and I'm sure more

I,too think off-road would be worse. If you really wanted my opinion. It's the nature of the beast. When I drive my Maxx, I'm always hard on the throttle. And I'm always looking for something to pile over. Something to jump or climb. By it's very nature, a monster truck is designed to beat the piss out of. Hence the reason the term "bash" is used when we all get together.

An on-road is all about speed through finesse. Yeah, they break. Chance meetings with curbs, lightposts, mailboxes, and other things will take them out. But I don't go out with my RS4 3 looking to clear large, heavy immovable objects.

And if the guy at your LHS breaks his on-road more than his Maxx, he's not driving his Maxx right...

Nope, the tie will not melt, NC answered your question on what doe it do. Those arn't very effective, I need bigger ones. The roll bar barly go over the head, so if my brother do roll without a body, then the head wouldn't be scratched. If HB made a optional roll bar as high as my Kawahra one on my Mtx2, then I will remove those ties...
