I am getting ready to receive my new XL this week in the mail. I am curious as to what kind of fuel is best to use with the 5.9 engine? What brand of nitro should I use and what brands should I stay away from? What about the engine, I have heard mixed reviews about it? I am looking for serious speed with great off-road capabilities. What about upgrading the suspension? What should I use -vs- what should I stay away from? I would like to make this truck look really sexy but not to much where I can't run it. If anybody could help me out in getting this truck pretty custom that would be great. I need to know what I can use -vs- what to stay away from? Are there any good catalogs, videos or magazines out there to get some great information from? Please do not hesitate to e-mail me if you can help me out. Just let me know and I will give you my e-mail address asap. I look forward to some feedback!!

Thank you in advance:),
JKD

Welcome to the site, The Savage is a great beginner truck.

Engines:
Its winter up here in MA and the temps are well below freezing, so if your not in a rush to break in the engine & drive the truck I would sell the 5.9K engine and upgrade to an LRP or picco 28. Lots of more power and speed. But if your a beginner the 5.9K is not bad at all.
Fuel:
In my area price and availibility are an issue. Lately I have been using Blue Thunder 20%. But I'm about to switch to Byrons Generation 2 racing 20%. I prefer BG2 and its what I'm going to use to break in my picco .28 P3(for my savage Xl), and my picco .26 jl reddot(for my revo 3.3). I'm waitng for temps to reach 32+. I would try other brands if available in your lhs, but definitely stay away from Traxxas Top Fuel, IMO it sucks I wouldn't even use it in a traxxas engine.
Suspension:Can always change the oil and the springs of the stock shocks, Upgrade to Hpi savage big bore sport shocks or The LST shock conversion(thats what i"m gonna do soon)
Information:
This forum is the best source of information IMO. You tube got some good videos aswell.
What ever you decide on make sure you have made your research, have time to work on the truck and money to spend. I'm thinking of organizing a Ma$$ R/C meet up sometime. So If your in MA$$ PM me.

I am from MASS I live out west, Springfield area. Thank you very much for some pointers. Now for the engines you stated I have heard those thrown out a few times, Lrp .30 and your saying .28? Which one is better? Also the Picco .28, are there different kinds for each one? I am kinda new to this, more like I took a long vacation and I was a lot younger when I did it and just went to to local shop which is now closed. Thank you for the tip on fuel I did more research after reading that and I believe I am gonna get and stick with the Byrons. Many thanks again and if you have some more please do not hesitate.

IMHO stay away from the lst shock mod. The oil in them adds alot of weight compared to the HPI bb's. Also, the Big bores are a bolt on mod and don't need any other parts, other than themselves.

I need to learn what all the abbreviations mean? can anyone shed some quick light on what I will encounter on this site and what they mean? Thanks:)

You'll see abbreviations that are universal Internet (IMO/IMHO/LOL/ROTFL/PM) and some that are topic specific.
For example, Gnarkill's use of HPI bb's means HPI Big Bore (shocks)
You'll also see stuff like OWB which = One Way Bearing

I'm in lowell ma dammm its cold any how you can do a shock mod that will make that handle alot better.take your shocks all apart in the shock their is a rubber stopper if u dont have one a pice of 1 inch fuel line will work.slide that over the shock shaft so the rubber stopper or fuel line hits the bottom of the shock shaft,(were your shock mount is} put your shocks back together and fill with baby oil.it is a great mod i have done it and can take a corner at 3/4 throttle without it rolling over

yes baby oil it is lighter i have it in my shocks plus it is on the savage foram
