 Ok I have a question, I have my Savage broke in and have the lsn and hsn set where they should be, temps running around 250 on high speed runs. The truck seems to run well. What I was wondering is the msn is still at the factory setting, do I need to adjust this needle, and if so what is the determining factor by when to adjust it? Thanks for your time

Steve

truck runs good and temps are good?? dont even look at the carb! consider yourself an expert and enjoy the truck!! :) all that I have read and learned.. You should have no reason to mess with the MSN.. Peace

I am by far no expert lol, but i guess what i was wondering is what is the determining factor for adjusting this needle???

no expert here either.. I can only tell you that from all I've read and around here.. you should not need or want to mess with it.. my understanding is that it will actually change your lsn setting.. if you look down the intake on the carb and turn the msn you can see that it changes the start/stop point of your lsn which is directly across from it.. infact I believe with hotbodies it actually says NOT to touch this setting.. all I have to offer, sorry I can't tell you more about it

HPI recommends that you do not adjust the MSN from factory setting. Then why is it even adjustable? Who knows but it is. The problem is that if you try to reset the LSN, when it bottoms it easily turns the MSN unless you hold the MSN so it cannot move. It's a pain but we have to live with it.

I've also found that you should pull your throttle arm out just a bit before adjusting the LSN.. other wise it can bind with the msn and actually be stuck... dont ask me why.. just my experience :)

That's because the LSN seats against the MSN. That's my point in wondering why the MSN is even adjustable. If you move the throttle and adjust the LSN in, how would you know where it would just make contact. It would be very easy to turn the LSN in too far and you would enf up with an adjustment that is not correct. I just started using a second screw driver and holding the MSN in place so it doesn't move. I then turn the LSN in just until I feel it touch and then bcak out the correct number of turns. I also used a scrib and made a small scratch on the outside of the MSN's slot so I can see if it stays put wher it was adjusted to.

along the same lines.. I noticed on my O.S. RG the LSN is below my HSN exactly where the MSN usually resides.. and at the end of my throttle arm ( where the LSN normally resides ) there is no needle at all.. ???? I'm sure there must be some intelligent explanation for all this crap.. I'm just not that intelligent! :)

I suppose there is too but it makes no sense for them to not even tell you what the purpose is for the adjustment. I also have OS engines and I think they are much easier to tune. The carbs are definelty better than the HPI ones. I wanted to put an OS carb on my HPI engine but the OS has too large an outside diameter to fit the HPI opening. I could machine down the outside but then it would only fit the HPI engine (I took it off my buggy engine to see if it would fit). I have an HPI NRS4-3SS and I never even ran that with the HPI carb. I put a spare OS carb on it and it tuned great and starts with one or two pulls every time, even when hot. The HPI engine with the OS carb would be a better engine. I think the carb is the weak point of the 21BB engine.

same deal with the hyper 8 port.. it's a smok'n engine.. just can't hold a tune.. we are gonna put the o.s. carb on that one

Thanks for all the info, slowly by surely i am getting to like this hobby more and more each time I go out and run, the knowledge i have gotten from this forum sure has made things alot easier to get into the hobby. Thanks for all the help!!!

we woulda junked everything we had along time ago if it were'nt for this site and all the good people here.. it really does make the difference...

No problem, we need something to do when it is raining (like it is AGAIN). No really, that's why we come here and everybody needs help at some time or another, if they want to admit it or not.
