What would you say is the most popular nitro vehicle of all-time?

I think the Savage series has surpassed the Hyper 7 series world wide in popularity over the past year.

I own and love both. What other nitro vehicles would you put with or even ahead of these in popularity? Would love here from the old-skool nitro heads!

Let's all have a friendly, constructive discussion as don't want people to bow up to the point it's no longer friendly. Define popularity however you like. I'm defining it as most people like the vehicle....not number owned or gross sales, etc. but the vehicle most people seem to own and love.

T-Maxx is certainly the most popular monster truck, but in terms of sheer numbers sold world wide, I think the RC10GT probably has that title, with such a long production run (1993-2006). Maxx will probably surpass it, though, since it's still in production, and the GT was discontinued over a decade ago. Maxx was introduced in 1999, so is now entering year 15.

It would be interesting to see if manufacturers are willing to release sales figures.

I see a lot of mixed feedack to the T-Maxx....where the Savage seems more universally loved (which is how I guage popularity). Numbers wise RedCat would be up there I imagine, but don't see them as popular - if that makes sense. ]

I will definitely say the Savage has the most hard-core following of any vehicle I know of. I mean you're either a Savage guy or you aren't. I'm fully on record stating the Savage is no where near as durable as the hype the surrounds it....but what I LOVE are the 'Savage guys' mentality (of which I am one). Some of the most creative things I've seen in surface RC are from Savage guys. They know how to wrench, and they solve problems based on actual field testing!

I've seen guys who couldn't solve simple problems with their Savages and so decided to switch to Traxxas and I just thought: :bowned: That's just me. I've never owned a T-Maxx, but my Savage did once at a track. Heh-heh. I'm kidding. Wait, no I'm not. That's my only experience with the T-Maxx....but my Savage pretty much bullied it (I really did feel bad for the guy as didn't know how to tune or anything...but again it is what it is). Not saying the Savage is better....just that based on what I saw in all candor it was not even a competition. It's all about preferences, of course.

I like the Hyper 7 better than the Savage (because it DEFINES durability when it comes to RTR vehicles--and a lot of race kits, I'm sure). BUT...I've seen Savages do everything. When I started looking at MTs half the guys were like "The Savage is as tough as any vehicle"....and half were like "No it's not - but here's what you can do..." so it was those guys who taught me how to appreciate the platform. Just depends on the route you want to go with it....every Savage is different. And of course everyone thinks their make is the best, which is why I like to try different makes as I'm not tied to any one....but other than that LST, have little interest in any other MT...because the Savage provides everything I want from an MT.

What were some of the original nitro vehicles that were wildly popular back in the day?

I'd have to go with the tmaxx as the most popular. Second would be the savage and third would be a tie for Ofna buggies and Kyosho buggies. I know the rc10gt was very popular and is still produced today as a gt2, but the above vehicles have it beat in terms of popularity imho.

every lhs i have been to in my state ,traxxas is the number 1 sold hands down i guess thats why i own so many. it comes down to what has the most/best support on the market but this is in australia so we are a much smaller market here.
on a side note my friend and i both have trucks ,him being savages and i t maxx/revos both brands have their strengths and weakness and he will have just as much down time as i do so at the end of the day its basically what your preference is kinda like ford vs gm. funny thing is i am a ford man where he is a devout holden man lol.

Kyoshos are very popular the world over, but OFNA........not so much. They're not even in the top 10 as a company.

Five largest RC manufacturers are:

Tamiya
Kyosho
OS/Futaba
Associated/Thunder Tiger

Pretty sure 5th place currently goes to Horizon Hobby, which includes Losi, EXC, Vaterra, and a number of others.

Last I heard, Traxxas was 8th, after Hobbico (own Axial, others) and HSP (Exceed, Redcat, etc).

Now, don't get me wrong, I really like OFNA products. But I seriously don't see one besides mine running at the local track but maybe every other month.

Tamiya Grasshopper and Tamiya Hornet for back in the day. Everybody knew what they were. Anybody from that generation knows what they are, even if they didn't own one.

Nowadays? T-MAXX.

Completely agree with you there. I live near Traxxas HQ. Some hobby shops here are exclusively Traxxas, which sucks for me at least. Traxxas' marketing is genius, AND for all intents and purposes I've yet to see them make claims that are not true (unlike RedCat).

Ironically their marketing had an adverse affect on me, as back in the day when I was considering a new nitro vehicle, I was going to get a Traxxas. I remember my son (who was 11 at the time) said "I don't know. It just seems like everyone has a Traxxas..." ha ha. So we ended up getting a Hyper 7. After talking with people--a lot of people--with Traxxas I'd say 30%-40% of them are detractors (meaning "Never again"). The only Traxxas I have remote interest now in is the Jato, and even then I'm probably going to just build it. I would lump the T-Maxx in the discussion with Savage, Hyper 7 for sure with respect to overall popularity, however. Once again, I don't define it as COUNT sold....but instead net promoters of the vehicle.

Agreed. World wide the Hyper 7 is VERY popular. In the states it's typically marketed as an OFNA Hyper 7...but overseas it's the Hobao Hyper 7 (same vehicle just different name).
