Well, I finally had my Savage tuned correctly and running great. Unfortunately, it had to sit for a few weeks and some problems have arisen and I cannot determine the sources. And I have no idea if any are at all related. So I am asking for help.

Problem #1: Steering is suddenly very vague and un-sensitive. Turning the remote’s wheel all the way only yields a very, very wide turn. Only symptom I can think of is that it gradually did not want to drive straight. One of the remote adjustments has to be turned all the way to keep the Savage going in a straight line. Could this be some sort of toe-out or alignment issue? I have not had any crashes, etc which would have altered any factory settings.

Problem #2: Again, all of a sudden, I have almost no brakes. One minute they worked, the next minute my Savage was flying though my neighbor’s flowers because I had no brakes. Again, I did not adjust anything or otherwise screw anything up. One minute they worked, the next, they did not. When I trigger the brakes, it acts almost like it is in neutral.

Problem #3: All of a sudden, the Savage is very hard to start. I may also have a fuel pickup problem, as described in #4. It seems like the roto start is not turning the motor over. When I use the roto start, I hear it spinning, but nothing from the tailpipe, except the occasional sputter when I release the button on the roto start. Once it finally gets running, it runs great, so I don’t think I have internal engine problems.

Problem #4: Fuel pickup. When starting my Savage cold, the motor does not want to pull fuel from the tank. I have tried a towel/finger over the tailpipe, which did not help. To get it started, I have to put a little fuel in the carb and suck the fuel through the fuel line myself. Even this is not enough sometime, and it is so easy to flood it. Once it is running, it pulls fuel fine, but getting it started can be a half-hour project.

Can anyone help me diagnose any of the above? If nothing else, I have learned that this is a very frustrating hobby!

If it doesn't track straight you'll need to adjust the trim on the radio. As for the de-sensitive steering. Your battery could be dying, which can easily be solved by putting in my AA batteries OR by getting a 5 cell hump pack (which is a lot better.

Problem #2: Again, all of a sudden, I have almost no brakes. One minute they worked, the next minute my Savage was flying though my neighbor’s flowers because I had no brakes. Don't know if you're rocking stock brakes or not. Assuming you're all stock, you may just need to readjust your brakes, or you could have stripped the screw holes that hold on the brake pads. If you're using Hot Bodies Brake kit, you're probably experiencing brake fade. I know I did.

Sounds to me like the one-way bearing is crapping out. That can easily be remedied by either blasting it with nitro clean, or replacing it all together.

You may have the HSN set too lean which would explain why you're not getting fuel in the carb on initial startup. But it could also go back to #3.

Hope this helps a bit...it's hard to diagnose stuff on the internet :(

1. servo saver may be worn out
2. brakes may need re-adjusting
3. it beeing easy to flood is a normal characteristic
4. I do not know what the problem is w/ the fuel pick-up, I have the exact same problem on my hpi rush w/ stock engine and cvec pipe.

my guess would be that your steering and brake problems are probably related to a bad battery (might wanna try recharging or replacing them).as for the hard starting/no fuel prime,I would check your lines and fuel tank for a possible leak that might be allowing any exaust pressure to escape.

I always have to prime my Savage when it wits for a week. Just blow into the exhaust pressure line. I hope you are not sucking the fule line.

All these are normal growing pains. You'll learn whenthe engine is flooded, and when to prime the fuel. Its takes a few weeks, but after you leran, its great.

Buy some one-way bearings, you'll need them.

Thanks to everyone for all of the advice. Brake problem was cured with new batteries. Now the truck lifts the rear tires off the ground under hard braking.

The steering problem is much better with the new batteries, but not perfect. It still seems like one of the tires is toed-out, and I took it all apart and cannot find an adjustment for this problem. The trim on the radio is adjusted as far as it will go, and it still wants to go a little crooked when it should be going straight. Not sure what to do about this. Suggestions?

Haven’t had a chance to deal with the other problems yet. It started right up yesterday, as it had not sat very long. I did clean the one way bearing with nitro clean, we’ll see if that helps.

Thanks again.
Matt

Unbolt the servo saver from the servo. Zero out the trim on the radio. Then put the servo saver back on with the wheels as straight as can be. Then it'll be as close to straight as possible :)
