While running the Savage tonight I suddenly realized the air cleaner had poped of. We were driving mostly in grass some asphault, some dirt.
I don't care about the air cleaner, I'll buy a new one my question is.
Should I take the motor apart and look for foreign debri should I soak the parts or should I just put a new air cleaner and fire it up!
This thing is real new and I can't buy a new motor.
On the other hand if somebody had to buy a new motor for their Savage what would the get.
It would be great to go balls to the wall and put some serious horsepower in the Savage.
Any reccomendations???? Please include price...hee hee and maybe a link
TIA

I too have just recovered from this issue. I had a motor saver filter that lost its top and the inside element said buh bye! Here is what I did. Take the remaining air filter off and inspect for damage. Take the head off to the point that your looking at the top of the piston. inspect for damage (scratches). I have heard on a two stroke the first place for damage to be occuring is the top edge of the ports. So, put the piston at bottom of travel and inspect the top edge of the cylinder wall ports. I saw no damage so I buttoned it up and drilled out my carb restrictor while i was at it and cranked it up. Had to retune for a while but I'm getting closer to back in action. Hope this helps.

By the way, I'm running a Picco this is all one should ever need to put in a Savage. Nothing but wheel spin and plenty of power to spare. Plenty. I'm one happy camper with this mill.

I had a motor saver pop off once, or twice. Ok, twice. First time, the outer foam got caught in my spur gear and kill the engine immediately. I just left it off. Then it fell off and I didn't know it. Ran it for about 5 minutes or so and brought it back and looked at it. Oh crap, where's my filter? Took the body off and it was just laying there. Put it on and kept playing. I was driving on grass. 5 tanks later, I took the engine apart to do some cleaning and looked at the piston and sleeves. All ok.

Sorry guys I would not just inspect the top end of the engine. If you can't afford to buy another engine now. I would take the engine out and do a full strip down and cleaning with Nitro cleaner of the whole engine then oil and then reassemble. It only takes a small piece of grit that is lodged in a bearing to totally rune an engine.

But this is just my opinion.

I have to agree with Alien here guys.........more than likely your engine is fine buckeye, but if you dont have the $$$ for a new one then better safe than sorry ya know. Saving money on a new motor is worth the a few hours work.

Hope all is fine!

I had my motor saver filter pop off while racing on a dirt track, must of ran about 3-4 laps without it. When i shut down i noticed it gone, carb full of dirt, well lets just say it took me about an hour to try and restart a engine that lost all compression, gone, bye bye, toasted. That fast it can all be gone, this engine was only like 10 tanks old too. Just be on the safe side and do a full cleaning like alien suggest. Good luck
