Wondering if a metal spur gear is a good purchase to make. If anyone knows about them would be helpful to know wether they are bad or good before I buy one. Thanks
 
They're not worth the money. All they do is send shock to the rest of the drive train in a wreck or hard landing. Plastic lasts along time when meshed properly.
 
i agree, if you are burning spur gears up check to make sure it is meshed properly. i had a problem after i replaced my engine i would burn a spur gear nearly every tank, closer inspection showed engine wasn't quite right of an angle. after i adjusted it, I've now run multiple tanks with no problems.
 
My first plastic spur lasted forever, still have it in fact.

Once I started playing with the sizes ect..... I was destroying them left and right (plastic) I got a metal spur (58 tooth) I am a BASHER BASHER BASHER. I am on my 2nd gallon of fuel, no problems. (with the driveline anyways LOL)

Properly adjusted slipper, and dont hold WOT in the air........

I stayed away from steel spur gears for a while because EVERYBODY says there askin for trouble. I will never go back to plastic now that I have tried one. TRY IT, use the paper mesh method, and adjust your slipper properly.
 
knall makes a good point. With a properly adjusted slipper, a metal spur shouldn't cause any problems. You will need a hardened clutchbell though. I like playing around with different gear combos, so it's way more economical to keep a selection of plastic spurs on hand.
 
It really depends on your setup, I ran plastic gears for years with no issues at all. Then I went big block once the engine was dialed in the plastic spur gears began wearing very quickly. The plastic gears just aren't meant for that kind of torque. At that point an rrp spur was needed, and you do not have to run a hardened clutch bell if your mesh is setup correctly its a non issue. So with a stock setup you probably are fine with a plastic spur, when you start looking at a more high performance engine particularly larger displacement higher torque engines a metal spur certainly has its place.
 
Be careful telling people they don't need a hardened bell. I burned up a trx bell in 2 tanks on my revo with a steel spur.....sharpened the teeth right up and the mesh had been perfect. I caught it just in time. I run plastic only, they're cheap, will hold some serious power, and I like to swap gears from time to time. With a true big block I guess I would go steel.

BTW is a metal spur gear directly related to broken drivetrain parts or could it be the slipper settings???

Any help would be greatly appreciated:D
 
It's always going to be from slipper settings. A metal spur with transfer vibrations to the tranny gears, but not really any more shock load than you'd get with plastic. Plastic is the way to go IMO, unless it came new with a metal one.
