Can anyone tell me or have an idea of what the normal operating temperature should be on the 3.3. I ran a tank of fuel and it's 90 degrees outside and it got to 319 degrees. Is this normal?

Thanks, that's what I thought too. Would that cause the motor to "load up" and start off a little slower? Once she is going, 1/4-1/2 throttle, she is a rocket. Has plenty of smoke coming out of the pipe as well.
Going to richen it up and go from there.

Are you sure it's loading up on the bottom? Could be starving for fuel on the low end which would cause your overheating!....set the lsn flush with the collar it is threaded into, from that point only minor adjustment is needed on the lsn, usually

Took the 3 needles back to factory. Filled the tank, started her up, made one pass... Fuel tank is cracked! Leaking everywhere! Then... My fuel bottle falls off my truck, breaking the neck of the bottle. Spilling the remaining contents of the bottle. Nothing like wasting that high dollar fuel huh. Lol. Hey that wards me a trip to the LHS.

Now's the perfect time to Violate your Maxx!
Ditch the stock tank, get an Ofna Violator tank, & some 40mm Axial posts.

Ooooh I like that! You guys are full of ideas, tips, and tricks!
Thanks guys.

Ok y'all, I set the needles to factory specs. Started the whole tuning again. Even after setting the HSN 1/8 counter from specs, LSN 1/16 counter from specs and the idle is "purrfect". The smoke is there through the run. First is tight, stands up nice! Second, little less smoke, with a studder usually at the max rpms. Not wound out second gear rpms, I'm guessing to lean on the HSN? Here's the thing, I don't get how even factory specs with such small adjustments, it's still running in the 295-305 range. It's cooler, but not cold enough. If I richen the mixture, spits fuel out the pipe, and runs like crap. I go back to specs and it won't stay running at idle. Cuts out. Which tells me, to lean. I love trying to find that happy medium. Any tips or ideas? Wish I could upload the data from the traxxas link.

Check for an air leak bud! Otherwise the piston and sleeve need be replaced....

Base of the carb
Back plate
Head bolts
Glow plug gasket
Front bearing
Look for a slice or split in fuel lines

And the most common of all of coarse is the fuel tank lid seal

Thanks hotrod. That gives me reason to do an engine tear down and rebuild. Not to mention all the new bulkheads, a arms, steering knuckles, and new bearings all around. Bumper to bumper, she should roll, spin, careen, flip, summersault, barrel roll etc etc like new! Not to mention all with a nitro noob at the helm! Only had the truck since march this year. Lot of work and upkeep, which I was told there would be. The way I see it, it's built to run and not sit on a shelf to look at. My LHS tried to talk me out of nitro and stay electric.
Think I'm going to order all new sleeve, piston, wrist pin, and just do a complete rebuild. May even purchase another 3.3 for a spare and extra sleeves and pistons.
Thanks again and for all my future noob questions.

Is the body sitting low on the chassis?
Got a hole cut in the windscreen for better airflow?

The LHS love to push BL/Lipo, lots of money up front for them, and no fooling around with fuel.
The closest LHS to me carries very little of anything for nitro's(had to order a maxx engine mount!),
& now only carries fuel in quarts(@$19 a quart), yet asks me why I don't fuel there.
I said have PowerMaster in gallons around the $26 mark & I'd buy lots of it!

Same here. They knew they couldn't talk me out of the Maxx. So they tried to sell me a sport maxx and the e-maxx. That is until I picked up a box with the color I wanted, 2 gal of fuel, and went to the check out. My LHS don't have many aftermarket or hop up parts. Rpm is hard to get for the maxx. I got mine off eBay, and for less than msrp! Basically it's all stock traxxas, axial, helion, and their newest fad, drift cars and parts.

As far as my motor is concerned, I'm going to run her till she blows! Then, going up to the LHS for the power up/trade my junk for new program. Unless! I find another motor cheaper and/or another brand etc cheaper.

Most often overheating is the result of too lean at the LSN. Adjust that till you get a good idle and a good takeoff. NEVER make adjustments till the engine is warmed up and run it around between each tweak. Do NOT run it for top speed, but keep checking the temp while you tune.
When the LSN is set start opening it up for WOT. That's when you make adjustments on the HSN.
