After running 10 tanks through my Hyper 7 engine my manifold is now showing discoloration. Is this usual or is my engine running too lean?

I guess you would expect some discoloration eventually?

I think it's normal, considering the heat that these engines develop. I run my engine around 220-233 F. The heat cycling of these engines will cause some discoloration.

Thats the reason I got ceramic headers instead of chrome on my real cars. Its normal for headers to turn some what mostly on real cars. Have you bene checking your temp any? What kind of nitro do you run?

iono, it might not be what I'm talking about... not sure, the best thing is to temp it. :dancin:

if its a buggy, chances are its dirt cooked on. mine did the same thing and I'm a temperature bandit, i take the temps all the time. i ran around 230 most of the time and thats where it chilled and fused the dirt onto the header.

That discoloration is normal. The suggested causes above are spot on. Cooked on dirt, spent fuel that has leaked around the gasket and cooked onto the header, and just plain old heat can all lead to what you see. If it were anodized a different color, you would see the anodizing suffering from the same phenomena. It would just be more colorful.

Thanks for all the comments. I think I will look into getting a temperature gun, don't really want to cook my engine!!!

I refer you bak to the two words:

Demon Clean

It will remove that ANY day of the week. You should see what that stuff does to old mucked up block etc. Its wicked!

After is get really caked up, like the block will, they lose their quality of releasing heat as well as when they are clean. The block and manifold are almost as important as keeping the head clean.

IMO.

Where can you get Demon clean from?

I live in the uk, so not sure whether it is available over here.

Ok, you got me. I like spending 20 bucks on cleaners.... lol

I'm telling you, when you get down to it, and want to get a header or block back to NEW, use Demon Clean. Not for your every day projects for certain. But if you want to get the COOKED IN crap off, this stuff does it better than any I know.

What sold me was when a guy showed me an OLD airplane engine he was about to do, and then a few weeks later I seen it. And I'm talking about a mill that HAD TO BE over 10 years old.

It looked as good as new.

I just sand blast my header but eazyoff oven cleaner gets the baked stuff off too. Take a couple of applications depending on how bad it's baked on. Doesn't do much for the discoloration though. Also leaving it on too long will pit the surface.
