Alot of you guys are in the IT field, or are in some way computer junkies. Guess what, me too. I run on a Mac G4 tower. I heard that these things rock for media, so about a year and a half ago I got it. Since then I have upgraded the hell out of it. It came with 256 Mb memory, dual 867 G4 processors, a combo optical drive and a decent video card (32Mb GeForce4 MX) . Since then I've upgraded the memory to 2Gb, installed a 200Gb drive, 120Gb drive, 80Gb drive (all internal) as well as a DVD burner. External drives are a 160Gb USB2, 80Gb Firewire HD and a 40x firewire cd burner. Printers: HP deskjet 895, Epson stylus photo R300, and a Laser printer. The R300 has a mulit memory card reader also. I've added a USB2 PCI card, TV/FM capture card (PCI). And today I picked up a video adapter dongle for the video card. The vid card has 2 ports onboard, an ADC and a DVI. the system came with a DVI to VGA adapter, but un until today I though there wasn't an ADC (Apple version of DVI) to VGA, but there was one hanging on the wall of the computer store I went to. Getting home I hooked it up and moved my old Dell 19" monitor from another station and feverishly hooked up the second monitor. I've run dual monitors before on Win boxes, but there's a catch to running those. The secondary monitor looses all Direct draw features as well as any other cool features (basicly you can run word processing and surfing, but that's it on the sec. monitor). Not so with this setup. I brought up the TV card and moved it to the secondary monitor and it still had picture. Even when it was split between the two monitors. I was like "cool". Now I can watch TV on one screen and work on stuff on the other. Oh yeah, all the perephrials are run on either USB or Firewire, no legacy harware.

So, tech junkies, what's your setup?

I just sold my latest and greatest to a freind. Lately (since summer) I've got out of gaming. I cannot however get out of home entertainment (the family would kill me)

I picked up a Dell Optiplex 2.4gig P-4 for just at $400. It as all the features of abuig huge system, but it's tiny. About 4" wide and can stand veetical or on it's side.

I had the Ge-force 4 256 meg tv in/out card, but it didn't fit right and the case wouldn't close.

Since I don't game much anymore, I picked up a lower end ATI video in/video out card rich on features, but a bit lacking on the speed. It puts out a pretty sweet signal to the TV, and I have a 5.1 card that hooks sound to the dolby reciever.

I have a decent DVD player(in computer), and a 48x burner

For portability I picked up a MS wireless keyboard, and wireless optical mouse. (by far my best investment). We can sit on the couch and totaly control the PC.

I don't think I'll ever go to a component sound/dvd/vcr system ever again, My computer does it all for me. It also allows me to setup games on the TV for my PC illitrate friends.

As for the network I'm all hardwired in the house to a linux router/ftp/mail/web server, it's a shell it has no keyboard mouse or monitor. I remote control it from my windows box.

For internet, I scored I'm way out in the country, with no cable or DSL. In town they have a wireless ISP, it's 11megatbit(fast as hell). Well, they said I couldn't get service out here, so I bought all my own equiptment(802.11b), and put up a big long pole. It didn't get service so I picked up a 1watt amp for my WiFi card. I set up the service all on my own, then called them told them I was using their service and told them to bill me. (they are still scratching their heads).

I'm finally all set up , and haven't tweaked with my computers in months

That's a good point bro. I used to run a Netgear router that logged suspecious external activity. You would not believe the number of ftp requests that home cable users never know about. I set up a small ftp for my dad to use (remember all the CAD work I was doing for him). I got tired of carrying zip disks or cd-r's, so I set up an ftp server (blackmoon to be exact). Now I get alot of incorrect login attempts. You should see the usernames that are trying to get in. I got it locked down pretty tight though (like 1 user and a tight pw).

Here's the last day or two and the log of people trying to get into mine without a valid user name/access Check out the guy in bold, trying to run commands on my serve! Geez.

He would have no idea I run an FTP unless he scanned my isp's ip adresses for open FTP ports, that means (basically)he scanned everone on my ISP looking for an FTP. Just goes to show there's always somone poking at your computer to see what's open and acessable..

The rest are just random people scanning my IP range for anonomous or public FTP's (I hope lol)

My stuff is low tech....

Toshiba Satellie P25 S509 laptop, 2.8 ghz ht, 80 gig hd, XP home, dvd everything, wifi 802.11g, 17" lcd, wireless mouse.

Dell 4000 P500, 17" flat panel, 6 gig hd, HP all in one printer, bottle of jack and cigars within reaching distance from that one.

I've been considering hooking the Toshiba up to my 55" wide screen via the s video input and maybe figure out a wireless keyboard if possible...any thoughts there Error???

Every time I have tried hooking up a TV to a computer via S-Video or RCA, I've had to set the resolution pretty ow to get it to work. Some TV's have the 15 pin D-Sub hookup to run as a computer monitor and it looks pretty good (buddy of mine does that with his TV/Monitor). Just a heads up on that. I personally wat a pair of LCD projectors and use the whole wall as monitors.


One time I got to hook up my PS2 to a NEC projector at a higher ed center. Played Gran Tourismo on a really large screen (~10' wide) and dolby surround. That was tight.
