:n00bie:

hey guys and gals. i registered with RCNitro Talk yesterday but have been reading the threads for the last month or so. i never had to register because all the questions i had, had been asked and answered in the past. but i have finished breaking in my car and have one question.

i have a Thunder tiger EB4 RTR. at first the car was really girky at idle and it used to stall when i applied full brakes. after expert advice from RC Nitro talk :smoke: i solved that probelm and it is running great.

i tried the pinch test last night and the car died after 2 secs. from what i read it should die between 3-4 secs so i adjusted the LSN so that it died just after 3 secs. the car starts and runs fine but when at idle it doesn't sound as stable as when the LSN was at its previous setting (when it died after 2 secs on the pinch test).

My local model shop doesn't sell temp guns :boxing: so i have one arrivng on Monday from Scotland somewhere. i'm waiting to set the HSN properly but i have nice stream of blue smoke at WOT for now so i think i'm not cooking the engine, plus the HSN is at just over 2 3/4 turns out.

Anyway, back to my question....will i harm the engine by having the LSN a little lean so that it stalls after 2 secs on the pinch test? the only reason i ask it that is sounds a little sweeter. i am still new to the game as i only have 3 weeks experience with nitro cars so i am confident that the veteran members of RC Nitro Talk will come to my rescue.

If you lean your lsn you will notice that your temps will be high. You should have an idle screw, bring your idle up a bit and your problem should be solved. By the way welcome to RCNT!

Cool...

thank you very much sir.

i think i'll leave work a little early to try that out.

You want 3 - 4 seconds on the pinch test. Yes, it can get a great punch off the line with a lean setting, but even at idle speed you can boost your temps to a dangerous level. I got ready to re-tune a guy's Traxxas 2.5 that reached 305 in less than 5 minutes if idling, and I pinched it off immediately. It shut down in barely one second.

I richened the LSN and tweeked the idle so that the engines dies in just under 4sec with the pinch test but still sounds healthy at idle. Hopefully by the time i get home today there'll be a temp gun waiting for me. Tuning sounds so much easier with a temp gun. thanks for the help guy - RCNT is pretty damn good!

Tuning needs to be done mainly by ear, and performance. The temp gun guarantees that it stays in a safe range. There are two times to test the temp. One, when it's idling. Let it idle and keep checking the temp till it doesn't rise any more, then make your final LSN adjustment if necessary. Two, while running it hard, check it about once a minute, then finalize your HSN settings.
