Hey everyone, i just bought my lrp .28 spec 3 for my savage, and I was wondering if I can break it in in winter temperatures. it is around 20 degrees F, and i have already gotten a few tanks through it in some warmer weather a few days ago (40 degrees F). The hottest my engine got was around 150 degrees so i know i need it to be a little hotter. I have heard of putting a sock over the cooling head to boost the temp a little is this true? I have a heat gun meter and was wondering if i can continue to safely break in my engine in these cold temperatures. Thank you.

It needs to be a lot hotter. You may have already done some significant damage to the mill. I don't hesitate to run my mills in cold weather but I would not recommend breaking one in during a cold spell.

what temperature do i need to reach to continue the process. I am skeptical that I have done damage to my engine after 1 3/4 tanks thru the engine, but I will take your advice.

I would suggest operating temps around 220-240 degrees on a normal (above 50 degree) day. You can preheat your mill with a hair dryer and wrap the head in foil along with the sock but again I would wait for warmer weather.

I break my engines in at about 200 degrees. It was 40 degrees yeaterday and i ran 5 tanks in mine. It does help if its warmer out. If ur only getting 150 u could lean the high speed a little to get hotter temps but i would def wait till it warms up so u dont ruin your engine like rcaddict said.

I would not lean her out prematurely. You want to do your break-in a little on the rich side to help with lubrication. If you DO lean it out (I wouldn't) I would suggest running a really oily fuel like Blue Thunder.
