My neighbor (i'm buying the car from) can't seem to find the title for this mustang. How hard is it to transfer it into my name without it?

Is there a way to get around having to wait 4-6 weeks?

Just wanted to know if anyone has had to deal with this before.

Thanks for the input

you need the title for paper work and registration. Pretty much mandatory. Tell your neighbor to go to DMV and request another title.

Yeah you need the title, I went through, or almost went through it. It's a major pain in the ass, but you need the deed.

I'm not sure how it works for auto's, but when I bought my boat two years ago Here in Mn) the guy I bought it from had lost the title. So when i bought it I took down his drivers licence number, all his info and got a bill of sale. Then he applied for a lost title and we did the transfer later. I'm sure you could do the same for that. Also when I bought my old Studebaker car (1952 Commander Coupe) that didnt have a title, so once I got it all finished being restored, I applied for a lost title myself, and got it no prob. Again this is in Mn. and I know all states pretty much have different laws. On monday Id call your local Dmv and tell them the situation and see what they say.

You file a lost title form at the DMV. 35 bucks here in Texas. i just did it with my Caprice. Then all you gotta do is get it registered (have to have insurance) and it's in the clear. You just have to either download the form or ask for it at the DMV.

Check with your DMV because I know that both in Michigan and Florida (where I currently reside), there are certain offices that offer "instant titles" for like an extra 10 bucks on top of the normal title replacement fee. Walk right in, the owner shows proof of ownership, and they print one right there.

the owner should be able to get a replacement title fromt he dmv. you on the other had would have to file for lost title and wait a month..or more!!

What would consittute a proof of ownership?

The car hasn't been insured for about five years now.

Here in CA if you have a bill of sale and the proper DMV paperwork filled out, you will get a new title in the mail upon purchase.

Contact your local DMV, it shouldn't be an issue. Just be sure you know where to find the seller just in case.

She lives just down the street from me. That shouldn't be a problem.

Proof of ownership is the current owner that it is titled to going in and showing ID. Not all, but some offices have instant title capability.

if ya call the Dmv, make sure ya have the cars Vin number. That way ya can tell them who your getting it from, and they can check there records as to the last time it was registered and who it was buy. Then when the names match up, I think youll be in the clear.
