Thanks guys. Hopefully some other parts show up tomorrow so it can start going back together. Everything is stuck in Indy 😖

I'm glad to see you back at the bench, this is looking good. 😍
I hope to be able to get back at it a lot more soon. I sat in there for about 45 minutes and wasn't hurting much at all when I got up. Before, 20 minutes or so had me hurting pretty bad. So happy days ahead I hope.

I'm good for about an hour then I need to take a break, between my tailbone and my back, It's a toss up which will make me quit first.

You guys need to be out crawling!

If I had that beautiful terrain outside, we'd have a fleet of crawlers 😀

I noticed on the OEM motor cover there was a spongy pad that is glued to it to seal up the spur/pinion gear housing. The new motor plate did not have it. Did you add that? I managed to put some heat on the plate and softened the glue and got it transferred to the new motor cover just fine. It was touch and go there for a minute, but patience prevailed.

I also love the fan grille you put on the ESC. Nice little rock catcher. I tried to remove the fan to clean everything really good, but in true idiot engineering fashion, the Horizon engineers made it impossible to remove the fan without a s##tload of work. So I just doused all the electronics in an alcohol bath and blew it out lol.

Spongy thing was OEM, probably something they added in at the factory. That ESC is toast, I'm tellin' ya! Motor sounded like a in-sink garbage disposal full of quarters.
Oh, ok. That kinda makes me happy. I love throwing RTR garbage away lol. I'll go ahead and rip the motor apart and see what's up. I bet it has some desert hiding in there 😅

I was just gonna run it til she puked, but if it's that far gone, the Hobbywing kit will work nicely in there. And now I have more work I can do 😁

Got the HW 3150kv 3660 in.

The pinion on the Spektrum motor was pretty tight, but my pinion puller came to the rescue.

These motor plates that have holes to position the motor for various pinions typically suck. And initially, there was zero lash on the gears. In fact, it felt like there was negative lash. I loosed the bolts and held the motor away from the spur and retightened them and the mesh feels pretty good now. It has the slightest bit of play in the gears.

I think the Spektrum motor may have gotten a bit hot. Either that, or they have really shiity magnets in them. The Hobbywing motor feels like the magnets are much stronger.

I decided to use a trick a guy at a sign shop told me. Mist the decal and your surface with water with a drop of dish soap in it.

The protectors still stuck through the water, and there were a few times I had to peel them up. As long as you don't press down too hard, they will leel right back up.

I decided to do the easiest part first. Worked perfectly. The bigger part was a bit more challenging 😆

Time to let it dry.

A good method i find for vinyl graphics is to spray the surface with windex, place the vinyl, then squeeze out the windex from the middle outwards. Start with gental pressure, repeat with more pressure. I also use a heat gun or hair dryer to help soften the vinyl and evaporate the windex.
Been doing this for many years on dirtbike graphics with great success!

I thought about using windex, but I've always had good luck with just water with a drop of soap. I'll try that next time and see if it slides easier.

Man, I gotta say, the exploded views in the manual for this truck SUCK!

The part in the lower left goes under the bellcrank. Why did they place it there? And the other part, what the hell does it bolt to?

Now, I know where most everything goes, and I am just using the exploded views for screw sizes, which they don't even show 🤬 Come on Horizon. Hire an engineer that didn't get his degree on sale at Walmart.

So. ESC placement time. I was thinking I'd mount the ESC where the stock Rx went, so I cleaned off the foam tape.

Went with my tried and true series of chemicals.

After removing the bulk of the tape I use WD40 and a wooden scraper to deactivate and remove the glue.

Then a squirt of Super Clean to remove the WD40, followed by a quick alcohol rinse, and she's good as new.

I thought briefly about just double-sided taping the ESC to the upper chassis brace, but that wouldn't be very secure.

So... I think I am going to have to design and print a couple parts to make an ESC mount. The stock one only works with the Spektrum crap.

Time to start designing...

No one can get in trouble for using the wrong screws this way!

Parts that don't go to anything on an exploded view are now considered to be "upgrade parts" and must be purchased separately. Horizon did this on purpose I imagine! 🤣🤣🤣
I like when I'm looking for parts inside an assembly and all I can find is the asembled unit... looking for the spider gears in a diff and all they show is the completed unit, front and rear or transmission parts... 🤣

This build is fun to read! Great pics! 👍

There's no upgrade parts in the exploded view. It's the actual parts. As seen in the pic above, they just stick random parts on the page with screws going into nothing. No assembly lines where they're needed. It's one of the dumbest exploded views I've ever seen.

At least it encourages ppl to use their imaginations! 😎
