Anybody on here happen to have any decent engine model files like this?

Hey, that one will work. I use Fusion and Blender. Haven't played with Sketchfab yet.

Thanks!
Here's the direct link to the hot rod model "hot road" https://skfb.ly/pst8n
He's provided the files for download (bottom left under his name). If you have Blender already, you can import the GLB and then edit (isolate the engine etc) and export.

Sketchfab is basically a gallery website for 3d files, games, artists and 3D scans etc. I used to use it to host 3D output of minecraft worlds for people to download and 3D print. They convert whatever uploaded into these Google and Apple VR formats, so you have to convert to get anything printable.

Good Luck!

I have blender, but don't know much about it. I can c9nvert the files to step giles I think. Then I should be able to chop away stuff I don't need. I basically just need the top half of that engine.

You can also use an online glb or usdz convert to stl website and then a program called meshmixer to edit the stl, delete whatever chunks of it and re-seal so its watertight for the slicer. If you get stuck let me know and I could process it later tonight.

Yeah, I already did that. I think one of those models might work.

Are you good enough with Blender to modify one of these a tad for me? I think I can get it done in Fusion, but not sure. It will be later on tonight before I can mess with it.

I'm not terribly experienced with blender, solidworks is my jam, but I can watch YouTube instructions with the best of them lol. We can reconvene this evening and mess with it.

I went through the tutorials with the blender guru guy on the donut model, but that was like 10 versions ago or more. I always wanted to really dig in and learn it, but have just never had the time. That and coding really isn't something I am good at, or care to be.

I was really good with Solidworks, back at version 13 I think it was, but stopped using itand forgot most of it. My last job used SolidCam which was some lame ass CAM package integrated into SolidWorks. Gawd I hated that software!

You use Solidworks for work or play?

Yeah, but I want more detail. Those are like Lego engines 😄

I was actually hoping somebody had one they bought from a paid site and wouldn't mind hacking the model into pieces and send to me. The one I like they want $100 for the model lol. I don't want it that bad. And I just need enough to get it through the hood like the pic above. Going to try to mimic that as closely as possible, Zoomies and all.

For work, I'm an industrial designer at a med device company. Have good relationships with my machinists and molders for the nonsense compound curves and surfacing operations I put on everything lol.
I'm in the same boat with another software package, I was good with Alias, but it's 5k a seat, so figured I'd try Blender to get a direct modeling option vs parametric and just haven't had the time.

I like Fusion. I have used all kinds of CAD/CAM stuff over the years. Delcam and it's CAD package, which was insanely powerful. GibbsCam, Inventer, AutoCad, MasterCam, and about 20 others I could name, plus a few I've forgotten. And I'd like to learn more in Fusion as well ss Blender. I just don't use it often enough now to really dig into them.

Years ago, I always wanted to get a few of the guys from work together and nerd out with a Blender study group. There were like 4 of us Machinist nerds that always tried to improve our skillsets, so they often came by my place so I could teach them stuff, and sometimes they even taught me stuff. I miss it man.

Are you still a machinist? I've found over the years the business focused guys/bosses wanted large jobs, dial-in efficiency etc and the machinists wanted interesting jobs. I can tell when I give them something new and they geek out over the 3d print trying to figure out how to do it haha

No, I developed degenerative disk disease about 7 years ago and within a year it became really hard to work. I was the prototype guy, process developer, fixture designer, and programmer for all the fun stuff. Like these axles for a coaster over in Ferrari World in Abu Dhabi. Super tight tolerances all over this guy. I didn't machine this. I design the fixturing, processes, and programs for the lathe and vertical and 5-axis mill operations.12" bar stock whittled down to this in 1.2 hours total cycle time. It was pretty impressive seeing the chips flying off it.

Great looking part and you handled all the complex side of things, way cool. That aucks about the illness, exposure to something or just luck of the draw?

Runs in the family. That, and killing myself working too hard.

Well hopefully it hasn't impacted your rc tinkering. Ill follow-up tonight see how you made out with the cad
