I'm looking into buying either a 4.6 savage or a 5.9 xl to make my return to r/c racing

what are the good/ bad points about these trucks?

thanks for the help people

I would have to say go with the 4.6 right now because the 5.9 just came out and is way expensive and you can't get some of the parts for it right now. The 4.6 is readily available at almost any hobby shop.

u do have a point, but what are some likes/ dislikes about the 4.6??

The savage is a tank. I can withstand a lot of abuse and is really strong. Has a lot of after market support and is great for bashing. Turns aren't very tight and it tends to flip over a bite. The Engine is very strong and really reliable too. Theres more +/-'s and just wait and you will get some better answer's.

I would hold off on the 5.9 till others have formed their opinions. It's still too new, and I like to have someone else go through the problems before I commit.
The 4.6 is excellent. Endless support and upgrades available for it. Rolling over is something most MTs deal with, but you can change shock and spring setups and wheel off-sets to compensate for that.
It's all part of this hobby. You change things to custom build your ride for what you like.

Like the others said the 5.9 is still really new. I don't even think you can get them in a hobbyshop yet? Anyways the 4.6 is a great truck. They take a beating like no other. With the 4.6 the turning problem is better than previous models(and can be made better with the purchase of a better servo) and the flipping is reduced due to the lower CG it has. Engine and Tranny were lowered 6mm I believe. The flipping over while turning is mostly due to running on pavement. To much traction and a high CG will do that to any truck. Just got to learn how to drive it and none of these should be a problem. I.E. no full throttle snap turns and take wide turns by swinging out and then turning.

Yeah, hold off the 5.9. As others said, it's still new. The 4.6 is still as fun too. It has many aftermarket parts and the engine is pretty strong.

I started building my 4.6 today, and all I can say is WOW. This is coming from someone who has been running a T-Maxx for a few months, and the quality is just remarkable. Traxxas has done a lot for our hobby and the maxx is a great truck for some people, but the Savage is a tank. Every part, down to the screws and all the way up to the engine, is built like a tank. This thing is a monster, I can't wait to get it finished and drive it. I gotta give it to Rolex, I don't know how he stood waiting too long. I couldn't even let the weather stop me, all my neighbors would be calling the fire department cuz my windows would be filling with nitro smoke!

I'm going to post some pics of the 4.6 X SS kit that I'm building tomorrow or something so you can see the quality.

Bigdiesel06, I took some pics of my Savage that I'm building using the Savage X SS kit. If you're going to buy the RTR version, they are almost the same as far as quality goes, the only differences are minor performance upgrades, such as a bigger carb, some steel gears instead of plastic, etc...

I'm posting a link here so you can see the quality of a Savage while it's in the build process bone stock. If you want to see a pretty Savage, take a look at the Rolex Savage build. I just thought these pics would be helpful because I was trying to find pictures of the kit but they were always either pics of the kit closed up in the box, or highly modified builds, it was hard to find pics of a bone stock build. I used to think that Rolex watches were beautiful, but the Rolex Savage makes the Rolex Watch look like a dog turd.

thanks man looking good, went to my local hobby shop today, they dont have alot but I'm still leaning more to a savage, hobby shop guy tryin talk me into a traxxas but not sure on that, i think that was because he stocked lots of parts for traxxas, sure wish i could see these trucks hands on, be alot easier to decide, but you guys have been great help

I have a T-Maxx and they're good trucks, especially if you want to customize them. Out of the box, a lot of the plastic parts are prone to breaking and need to be replaced, whereas the Savage has stronger parts out of the box. The aftermarket support for the savage is good, but I tend to see more T-Maxx parts than anything else.

And yea be careful and always do more research than one hobby shop. I have a friend that owns a hobby shop and he told me that owners of the shops often tell him that they like to sell T-Maxxes because they go through parts so fast. I believe it's important to support your local hobby shop because without them, who would sponsor the local races, who would talk to the powers at be in city hall to get tracks built, and what would you do when your getting ready for a race or out bashing and you foul your last plug on a Saturday? You would have to order one and hope its there in a week, vs just going to the local hobby shop. Just remember, the owners of the hobby shop are salesman first and foremost, and it's always good to get a non-biased opinion.

i agree, one thing i didnt realize was that all traxxas are 1/10 scale???? well that eliminates them as I'm lookin into 1/8 scale, its pretty much down to a savage or a losi lst 2
