Locking Diffs

That works too, but a little less than user friendly to rebuild in the event I need to take the diffs apart in the future.

Yo EP, I have one of those on order, I should have it by Wednesday. Also the alloy brake hex.

El, that should now work better than using rocks, trees, parked cars and stuff like that to stop the truck :p:

You can actually use silly puddy to lock the diffs. It even comes out nicely too!! It's also cheaper

I'm hoping to buy myself some differential grease for my stock engine Storm. My B-day is coming up the 11th and I plan on whooping my friends alluminum storm & a Hyper 8 port on that day and show him skills are better then alluminum.
:trout:

Silly Putty? That actually works? How long does it last? Sounds good for use in diffs that don't seal.

This may be a lame question but I'll ask anyway.
Does this thread then mean that the factory differential cases will hold liquid oil without it all leaking out? If so, I wish I'd known that when I had the truck pull apart. I even have the dif oil to use from my Athlete buggy. If they do hold oil then I'll be sure to put this on my "To Do" list for next time the truck is apart.

Maybe Larry. There is a gasket between the metal bevel gear and the diff housing. But the oil/grease might seep between/thru the bearings. Maybe with some careful application of silicon RTV the diff case could be sealed to hold oil.

It should be able to hold silicone. Just Remember to screw it back togather tight and there shouldn't be a leak. If you are iffy about it try it in the front or back first, that way if it does leak it won't spin all over the car. Make sure where the main gear on the diff meets the case there is no dirt or sand that would prevent you from sealing the diffs completely, and use the star technique when screwing the diffs back togather, that should help the seal.

El - you want to put the oil into the cup where the spiders are. It SHOULD hold your diff oil.

eh, no. Locking them makes it so that the differential will give equal power to the wheels and not just the free wheel.

If you try looking at page 19 in the savage manual, if you look at picture 1 it’s the assembly of the differential, at “action” number 4 & 5 you place the 2.5x12 pin and then place the 4x4 set screw in the hole if you screw that one further in you can actually lock the bevel gear (p1x207). If you want to make sure it can’t move at all you can replace the set screw with one at 4x8 mm and drill a small dent in the bevel gear then it won’t move anymore
