Automotive pinstripe tape. 3M if I can get it. The stuff you get at Autozone is lower quality and sometimes a little more difficult to get the backing off cleanly.

Great Planes sells masking tape in various thin widths. I have 1/16,1/8 and 1/4 that I used on this body. It works great and does not leave any residue. Not sure if it's more or less costly than the pinstripe @ $3 a roll.

What kind of tape? masking or vinyl? Masking tape is pretty much only good for straight lines. Pactra makes masking tape in various widths and it's utterly worthless for curves.

That's the same reason I use auto body trim tape. VERY flexible when the top cover is removed.

This was available at HobbyTown just as you see it. All those stripes on one roll. I used them together here, but use the rest of the roll for masking separate striping projects. Everything from 1/2" to less than a 16th.

10% Gray
20% Gray
40% Gray
60% Gray

Personally I think I would have gone with 22.5% Gray

Edit: Masking is a term for which the tape is used,not the material from which it is made. It even says "masking" on the package. :

but seriously, thanks. I'll have to try that out. Pinstripe tape is relatively expensive but it all boils down to how long the roll is as well. I'll certainly look into it when I run out next time.

Right now I'm using 1/8 inch black striping tape from HobbyTown, made by Great Planes. 36 feet for $3.50.

Yeah, that's a pretty good deal. Is that backed or not? In all reality it doesn't need to be backed for this type of application.

It's got a backing, but unlike any multiple parallel stripes, there's no clear top layer to keep them lined up. With multiple stripes you need to peel the backing, put them down, let them sit a day, then pull off the clear layer.
The backing is easy to remove on the Great Planes strips and it's flexible enough to make some pretty good curves.
