Awesome! We were sitting on the beach in Tampa when we heard the double booms.

What exactly makes the double boom? Is it going Mach 2 or something?

yessir, twice the speed of sound.

The double boom you hear is from the rapid overpressure from the nose cone of the aircraft and the rapid return of normal pressure once passed the tail of the aircraft. Normally this occurs within 1/10th of a second on normal sized craft and not easily distinguishable to the human ear, but the shear size of the space shuttle increased the pressure and the time it takes to pass the tail, to 1/2 second, I.E. easily distinguishable.:D
