After getting out of work I roll down my windows to enjoy the nice breeze as I'm flying down the highway. When I get home I try to roll up my left front window but it wouldn't go up! I have a 97 Ford Tarus GL with power everything.

The first thing I check was the fuse. That was ok. I grab my trusty screw driver and start tearing into the door panel. After removing the panel and the backing I located the motor. I noticed it was warm to the touch. So I figured I roached the motor. I get on the phone and call a the local auto parts store. Out of 4 places only one was even able to order it! They wanted $70 + a $30 core charge!!!

I decided to take a break and poke around on the Internet to see if I can find a parts diagram to see how to remove the motor. While doing some searching I find several posts about how the person took a hammer to the motor and gave it a gental love tap.

I sure didn't believe it but I figured I have nothing else to loose. I go back outside and give it 2 good wacks. Sure enough the window wound up!!!

Do we have any car mechanics in the house? Should I worry about this motor giving out again? How do you go about removing the motor? It looks like it is fastened with some type of pop rivit. (I think) If I was thinking I could have taken some digipics. I had my camera in the back seat. It sure wasn't the regular nut and bolt like I've seen before. I would look at the Chilton or Haynes manuals at work but I didn't feel like driving an hour back into town with my door all torn apart. :hehe:

I must have did something to make the RC gods unhappy. Because I was planning on burning some nitro after I got out of work but then this came up. Oh well.

ill have to give that a try on my 64 t bird it has elc windows.and both don't work.this place in navada concourse auto wants 130 bones to rewind my motors...

Hey MC i would definately consider on getting a new motor if its done it once it will do it again, and to get it out sounds like with those rivets your going to have to drill them out its fairly easy to do if you got a drill and a couple of bits, the crappy thing is if you dont have a rivet gun, if no rivet gun is there room to put bolts through the new one. let us know.

It's known as a blind spot on the armature. The odds are in your favor that it doesn't land on that exact spot very often. It happens with starter motors occasionally.
To save yourself the effort of pulling the door apart to bang on the motor, sometimes a good slam or two will do it. If it still doesn't work, a swift kick to the INSIDE of the door usually will make it work.
I had a Lincoln that used to do that in the driver's door, and it seemed to only happen when it was raining.
Ford products do it with window motors, GMs are more prone to do it with the starters.

The Ford Escort was known to have the same problem with the starter motors. I can't tell you how many time I had to crawl under the two I had to whack the starter housing with a ballpeen (sp?) hammer. but it lasted me three years that way. Every so often just have to give it a LOVE tap to get things moving again.

MC take some pics of that bad boy I wanna see it. I used to wrench on cars I just might be able to help you. There is almost nothing on a car I haven't done.

I think I just might do that. I work for a large library system so we have a ton of car manuals and such. None of them have anything I am looking for. The Chiliton books don't even have a section for the door! Alldata (an online car repair database that we subscribe to) shows what I have to remove with a semi decent blowup but nothing great.

I will reaquire my digicam this weekend so I will take some pics then.

Man it can't be all that hard it just can't. I've changed glass in a door before so the motor honestly can'g be that hard to replace. If it is in fact some pop rivets just the right sized drill bit will pop them out. Honestly can't believe that Alldata or Chilton's didn't have anything for you. You know if you know anyone that works for a ford dealer or sweet talk your parts guy at a local ford dealer they will hook you up with a drawing of what needs to be done. I recently was changing a serpentine belt on a 2001 Oldsmobile Aurora and there was no routing diagram on the car for some reason and not in the manual. Well the car is too new for Chilton's to care so I called the local Olds dealer and the service manager was kind enough to fax me a routing diagram for no charge. Nice guy.
