Issues with HPI Savage XL

So I just took out my new to me Savage XL and it won't stay running unless the wheels are off the ground. If I pull the cord while all 4 wheels are on the ground it surges forward.

Also it will not roll backwards if I pull it with all 4 wheels on the ground.

This isn't normal right?

Any ideas what the issue may be?

2 speed tranny.

Check your clutch. It may have a broken spring on one of the shoes or the bearings may have seized up.

Definitely pull the motor and check the cb bearings and the clutch. It's most likely a snapped spring or if it's an alloy clutch maybe it's hung up on the flywheel.
